Default Matt Lindland Claims That UFC Contracts Are Illegal

MMANEWS.COM | Matt Lindland Claims That UFC Contracts Are Illegal

Republican House of Representatives candidate and - of course - highly respected middleweight Matt Lindland believes there is something very wrong with the contracts from MMA’s top organization.

The UFC contracts are illegal. Based on the Muhammad Ali (Safety) Act, you cannot be the promoter and the manager at the same time,” Lindland said, “If they are telling you who and when you are going to fight, they are the manager as well as the promoter.”

I am definitely not a lawyer so it is hard to fully judge the validity of the statement, but in reading the Act, Lindland does make a few good points on how much control an organization can have over a fighter.

Lindland also said that one fighter in particular is planning to test the Act in court.

I believe that is what Randy (Couture) is saying as well.”

Anything to bring the UFC down I guess; I am sure there is a stipualtion somewhere in the rule that makes what the UFC is doing perfectly legal.....

(Bracing myself for 1st fanboy remark.....lol)

Who is Dana White managing? As far as I know he dropped being a manager once he became the president of the UFC. As for the Ali act I thought that it legally wasn't applicable to MMA yet.

I'm sure the UFC has everything covered on their end. That's my guess.

I just looked up some info on the Mohammed Ali Safety act and i can see why Dana White and the UFC would be against having it apply to MMA. It would give fighters control over thier careers and take away some of the extreme contractual measures that the UFC uses to lock fighters into long term deals that are certainly not in the best interests of the fans or fighters. This should be interesting to watch unfold and to see how the UFC tries to sell the public thier side of the story.

There very well could be truth to all of this, but imo Lindland's just pissed that the UFC hasn't picked him up.

from what I can tell the muhhamed ali safety act in an actual law more so than a boxing rule. From my interpritation its totally to protect proffesional fighters. At the time there was only boxing or Im sure it would have included all Combat Sports. This will be really interesting to see if the UFC can win in court. Do you realize if they lose we may not have t wait til the top fighters are past their prime to see the fight

I am sure it will not hold up in court considering what was available in combat sports at the time.
mma was not even a thought then so to take something that is so much more evolved then boxxing & try to make it follow old rules or laws even would be pointless imo.

Guess we will see though.

I believe you're right. From what I can tell so far, I think the UFC may lose.
