You're right about him being great when he is in shape, but don't count the times that he has underperformed as being fodder for him being overrated. BJ is rated right where he should be, as one of the most gifted fighters in UFC history.

I think Cung Lee is pretty overrated as well. Maybe im just frustrated because someone the other day told me he would beat up anyone in the UFC no problem.

Give the guy some time and pray he gets teamed up with a good camp. Cung Lee can be grouped in the same catagory as Lesnar...someone with tons of talent, but still too raw to be considered a great or overrated fighter.

Cung Lee should not be classed in the same category as Brock Lesnar. Lesnar has no wins over top level fighters, Lee does.
I don't see how Cun Lee can be called overrated, well at least by those who know MMA. The guy is doing excellent.

I do feel that way, but its not Cung Le's fault that no one has attempted to seriously work the ground game on him. Everyone has been so set of beating him standing that they forget there is even the option of testing his grappling ability. In the meantime Cung Le is probably working the ground game in the gym everyday. As time passes the opportunity to "expose" his ground game is passing by.

I agree with the last few posters, Cung Le is not overrated, for crying out loud he just beat Frank shamrock and broke his arm. From the San shou matches I would think Cung Le can take down other fighters and he probably is working on his ground game for when it is needed. Putting him alongside Lesnar and Slice is absolute lunacy.

Well also remember that frank allowed cung le to win basically because le wanted nothing to do with the ground game & also frank rocked le a few times in the stand up.
I think if frank went to the ground le would not have got past rd 1 hence why le refused to go to the ground when frank waved him in smiling lol.

I really don't think that raw is the right way to describe Le. If you have followed his career you know he has awesome takedowns and we all know about the striking. So, unfulfilled as of now but def not raw.

GSP, even though he is one of the best in the world, too many people think he is unbeatable in my opinion.

And I would agree. I'd say Sylvia is one of the most underrated fighters of all time if anything.

I completely disagree with this, and this is why:
He's never been KO'd or even near being hurt by a single shot or accumulation of shots. Even in the Hughes TKO loss, he was taking everything Hughes was throwing and more, he was just too gassed/injured to defend. Let's also not forget the fact the Hughes quite possibly outweighed BJ by 15lbs come fight time, GSP maybe 20lbs, and need I mention his fight with the light heavyweight Machida?
He's never even been close to being submitted and has quite possibly the most effective MMA applied ground game there is. Nobody in MMA has the dexterity and flexibility BJ has on the ground, bar none.
You can't say either of those things about anyone else, even the "great" Fedor. Fujuta had him looking like me the night I blew .26 on the breathalyzer, and Mark Hunt of all people had him side mounted with an armlock applied. Even the invincible Anderson Silva has been submitted.
Bottom line is the legend that is BJ was born from the fact that he never had to train for fights to win, and even when he lost he looked damn good doing so. This man in shape is downright frightening.

I don't know how Rashad can be considered overrated when he's not even in the top 10 at MMAweekly and has guys like Jardine and Wandy above him in all the rankings.
Meanwhile, Tim Sylvia is ranked 4th (SD - only Fedor, Nog and Randy above him) and 5th (MMAW) at heavyweight. Hardly underrated if you ask me.

1)Polar Bear Varleans - He was just a big Alaskan dude
2)Harold Howard - He might think he knew the secret to defeat Jiu Jitsu, but he sure as hell had a hard time figuring out NINJITSU when Ninja Cop from Nebraska Steve Jennum armbarred him to capture The UFC HW title.
3)Kimo Leopoldo (Although I liked him, he was ballooned too high for the only guy that could hang with the old Royce Gracie).

110% agree. And I think BJ learning that and evolving into what he is now? And still relatively young? What 32 or so?
He's a dangerous man in a stacked division where he will be pushed ALOT.
I was never this huge BJ Penn Fan, but never disliked him either.
Now? ****. He "Has a Six Pack Now", as he proudly proclaimed after he won his title back.
BJ I think is something of a legend in the making in progress that's going to do great unbelieveable things in The UFC.
People try to compare Anderson Silva as being the closest thing to Bruce Lee in MMA. I beg to differ. I think BJ Penn is.
Would not be surprised at all if BJ Penn is the first fighter in The UFC/MMA to win 3 different belts in 3 different weight classes.
Afterall, Couture admitted he couldnt take Penn down.
That's insane.
Can you dig this?
BJ Penn UFC LW Champ
BJ Penn UFC WW Champ
BJ Penn UFC MW Champ
We'll see the next couple of years.

Though you make some decent points about BJ being really good, Fedor has never been TKO'd and BJ has. Aoki at the least equals BJ in flexibility and surpasses him in versatility of subs. And remember, I never said BJ wasn't good. In fact I said he is great when he is in shape. I don't throw terms like "great" around lightly when talking about fighters. I mean it when I say BJ in shape is a great fighter.
But he is also 13-5. And some people act like he is 113-0. No one is anywhere near as good as the BJ nuthuggers think he is. Again, BJ is great when in shape. But he is definitely over-rated by many (not all).
