I think Diaz has found a way to make his weaknesses work for him. He's not a power puncher so when he does set up for the power punches, it's after dozens of "feeler" punches that do accumulative damage. And those power punches are to a BIG area: the midsection. Greater chances of scoring and less expected. His antics are for show. Like he said after the fight, "don't believe everything you see. It's a show." He may or may not be an asshat, but his antics throw people off their game. Makes them careless. As for the big hits he did take from Smith, it looked like he wasn't fazed much by them, since his defense allowed only few and infrequent bombs from landing. He doesn't have a glass chin like Arlovsky, but he doesn't slip and elude like Machida either. His hitting style doesn't allow for it. He needs to be in his opponents face, deflecting and "pecking" with his punches. Plus his outstanding ground game capitalizes on his opponents reaction to "escape" the rain of blows if they attempt a takedown. Like I said last night, taking Diaz down is like giving a fat guy candy.
Who can beat Diaz? Someone with reach and who can trade accurate power punching against Diaz's pitter-patter. And that someone better do it early in the fight, not when he's bruised and battered by the accumulation of damage. I think that person doesn't necessarily need to be a submission specialist, but just savvy enough to stuff takedowns and strong enough to get back up if he does get taken down. Strangely enough, maybe someone like Guida. Or someone who can implement Guida's kind of relentless attacks.
