KOTR 19 - Hampton, VA
For those of you here at the Fight Forums that live in the Hampton Roads area there is a good MMA event coming up in November. I plan to be there.King of the Ring 19
http://www.kingofthering.org/next.html
On Saturday, November 11th, 2006, at the Hampton Convocation Center at Hampton University, King of the Ring Productions will present King of the Ring 19. Doors will open at 6pm and fights will start at 7pm. It may not be the UFC, PRIDE Fighting, or KOTC, but it is a LIVE MMA event.
Here is a link to the poster for the event:http://www.kingofthering.org/kotrPoster.html It does not say who is fighting, but you never know who might show up.

Cool. I have never been to a live MMA show, despite being a fan of the UFC since the early days. I have just never lived in an area where it was available. I am glad that it is only a 30 minute ride up to Hampton. In Flordia, when I was visiting a friend in Orlando, they had MMA events in little bars. We passed a bunch of bars and they all seemed to have an MMA event planed on the marquis (or whatever those ad boards are called that you see outside of restaurants and bars). It sucked that we were not able to attend any of them (we had too much other stuff going on).

I think they run one every few months. I just found out that I may have to miss this event as well. THAT SUCKS! I was really looking forward to going. I will keep an eye out for future events and post them when I know more. My whole weekend just got flushed down the crapper.

Ok here are some highlights of the event. It was live so it's all kind of a blur to me because I was so amped up.
-There were 15 fights and 4 title bouts.
-The Thai Boxing title bout was absolutely insane. One guy was about 6'2 and had these crazy long arms and was fighting an opponent who looked like he was 5'6 or something. The tall guy kept landing all these really flashy spinning back kicks and axe kicks at will. The little guy would close the distance and hit him with these really hard low kicks, man they were LOUD.Anyways, the big guy kept hitting him with all these spinning kicks and then BAM,out of nowhere the little guy catches him with a huge spinning back fist and almost drops him.The little guy kept hammering away with leg kicks, and by the end of the fight the tall guy could hardly stand. The tall fella won a decision, but afterwards he stood right next to me(I was literally six feet away from the ring),and his leg was absolutely mangled.
-The final title bout had some really slick grappling and the challenger took down the champion and worked some ground and pound, but got caught in a triangle, the champion then transitioned into an armbar, but the challenger hopped over and was able to get out. They ended up with the champ in side control, but the challenger locked in this really weird triangle on his back from side mount,it was like a head scissor or something, and it looked like the champ was gonna tap,but he pushed out of it as the round was ending. In the second round the champ slammed the challenger and I guess he hurt his shoulder or something because he was holding it and tapped right after.
-One fighter had no MMA training or experience and I guess just signed up to fight.Bad idea.He recieved the worst slam I've ever seen.He got a slam from the clinch that looked just like the first slam in the Randy/Chuck I fight. He then got mounted and pounded until he tapped.
-There was one HW fight, but they weren't really HWs,they were just really overweight. It was this huge black dude againt this white guy who trains and Gustavo Machado in VA beach.(I hang out there sometimes)They clinched up for about a minute until the ref seperated them, and then the black guy landed a huge uppercut and put the white fella down for good.
-The first Thai bout was really funny, because one guy was doing the Kenny Florian"Take the arrow out of the quiver and shoot your opponent routine" before the fight and was waiving to the crowd trying to be cool and stuff. Then they started arguing beacuse the one guy wanted to wear head gear and the other didn't.Well anyways, the guy who was showboating to the crowd caught a knee about 10 seconds in,and the ref stopped the fight.
There wasn't a whole lot of people there,a couple of hundred, but the crowd was really loud. The crowd was pretty bad too though,at least in my section. They kept calling this one Mexican a fighter wetback, and that he was a disgrace to America. All kinds of cursing and racial slurs. They were pretty rough.
That's all I can really remember because like I said it was kind of a blur.Only two or three fights went to decision and they were all exciting. They said the next KOTR would be in February, and who knows, maybe I'll be fighting on that card.

Thank you, Ryduce. That sounds like it was a lot of fun (despite the audience's behaviour). I will definately be planning ahead for the February event. I waited to long to get my act together and my plans were trumped by stuff happening here at home. I also like to attend the Norfolk Admirals hockey games here at Scope. But, that seems lame compared to a MA and MMA event.

Yeh and on top of all that I got home at the exact same time the TUF finale replay came on.
