What fish do you eat?
I'm trying to expand my diet a little more by trying some fish. I was wondering what types of fish you guys eat that won't break the bank? (poor college kid here). When I was younger I never really liked fish, but I am starting to eat a few select kinds of seafood.
I like swordfish, but that stuff is way too expensive to eat regularly. I'm going to buy some tilapia fillets tomorrow and see how those are. I've heard there pretty bland tasting, so I guess that will be good. I'm looking to buy one other type of fish tomorrow.
Along with some cheaper fish to try, anyone have some good recipes to try?

I only eat tuna and salmon.
And usually it's in can-form too.
So, no recipes there.
Just cheap food with protein and that good fat.

Yep, I eat a lot of tuna steaks. Nice and quick to cook too. Stick some chilli, lemon and coriander on it to give it a nice Thai taste too.
Other than that I eat quite a lot of haddock (usually breaded), rainbow trout, cod/pollock and lemon sole.

I love to eat Walleye, we catch and eat tons every summer. Northern Pike are good too as long as it is cooked properly, as is Rainbow Trout.

I used to eat at least a can of tuna a day until I read a warning about mercury content. It advises you to only eat one can every three days. I probably have mild mercury poisoning and just don't realize it, lol.
I generally eat tuna, salmon, tilapia, and orange roughy.
If there is a Wal-Mart near you they have frozen, vacuum packed fish steaks for 88 cents a piece. That's about the cheapest price I have found so far.

Eating fish these days has become a big trickier. As a child i used to catch alot of fish from local rivers and streams to eat but have since learned most of those rivers are polluted and eating fish from them is not recommended. Then you have Tuna and mercury. The best way around this is to eat tuna from smaller members of the species, usually called Chunklight, its from bluefin. Albacore, which is the nice big chunks of fish is from Yellowfin which are much bigger and tend to have more pollutants in them. Generally the higher on the foodchain the more toxins. As for Farm raised fish? they tend to be dirty and less healthy then wild caught. as for 88 cents Walmart fish? i'll pass on that thanks. There is a reason its cheap and its not because its healthier.

I tried tilapia and canned tuna this week. I baked the tilapia with some olive oil and breadcrumb, it came out pretty good. I also tried a canned tuna, which I was surprised that I actually liked. I had it on toast with olive oil, lemon juice, and a little pepper(I hate mayonnaise). I think I'm going to try pollock this week because its on sale.

The only fish I eat is what I catch, and prepare myself. Mostly catfish and some trout.

As a fellow Saskatoon dude, I am with Saskabush, all sorts of fresh caught fish (just not from the Strap ), but also I am a big fan of Tuna Steaks, they grill up just like a beef steak. But if you are on a serious budget I would look into Talapia CalorieKing - Calorie Counter - Calories in Fish, Fresh: Tilapia (Rain Forest), raw.
This is actually a half decent site all around CalorieKing - Diet & Weight Loss Information - Calorie Counter and Nutritional Information

Orange Ruffy is pretty cheap and it is easy to cook. It does not have a strong fish taste either. I put it in a oven pan, add creole seasoning, add sliced tomatoes, onions, bell peppers and mushrooms and cook for 45 minutes. Really good and not bad for you.

I've tried a few different types of fish, tuna steaks are my favorite, but I only get them when their on sale. Swordfish, Flounder, Sol were all pretty good too. I had tilapia a few times, sometimes it was good, but other times it tasted a little muddy.
I tried pollock, my god that stuff was nasty, it was like eating tofu. I tried sushi and was surprised that it was actually pretty good. I think Salmon is next up to try.

Catfish is ok, really doesn't have any taste, mostly just canned tuna here and shrimp once in a while.
