I am addicted to Hummus
An ex-gf of mine was telling me how much her sons loved hummus, and that she thought I would like it as some brands are pretty spicy. I then heard Mac Danzig talking about it on TUF 6. So I googled it, and if the info I found is correct, hummus plus whole wheat Pita bread gives a very good amino acid profile in a no meat snack or meal. One site claims it gives 100% of all necessary aminos for humans. I have not verified this claim elsewhere, and I am not a nutritionist - so it may or may not be true.
I bought some Spicy Three Pepper, Red Pepper, and some Garlic hummus at WallyWorld along with some whole wheat pita bread. I just tear off chunks of pita bread, dip it in the hummus and enjoy. It has totally replaced Doritos and bean dip in my snack food rotation. And it appears to be a much more healthy a choice, with more "good fats" due to the olive and/or canola oil that is used to make it.
Sam's Club has the best deal where I live, with a HUGE vat of the stuff at a really good price, but I am not a member so I have to piggy-back off my friends who are. I lean toward the spicier types, but plain hummus is very mild for those who don't like spicy foods.
Anyway, for those looking for a healthier snack, and especially for vegetarians (I am not one) this might be something to consider. I can't stop eating it!

Yea, hummus is pretty good. I love tribe's sun dried tomato and basil humus on triscuits or pita chips(although pita chips are normally expensive, so normally op for the triscuits).

Makes me fart like a foghorn, but I love it.
And watch out for some of the commercially made hummus brands. They can contain a lot of hydrogenated oil and even mayonnaise, which is a totally gross and unnecessary thing to put in it.

I hear ya S&S. My favorite brand Athenos uses Olive Oil. A slightly cheaper brand uses Canola, which I think is still ok. I do read the labels on it, for sure. Their Spicy Three Pepper is excellent. The Athenos Garlic is very good too, and the Red Pepper.

Ive been addicted to hummus for quite sometime. Its easy enough to make your own and most likely a little cheaper. Just get some chic peas (garbonzo beans) lemon juice , garlic and olive oil and puree.
Try putting it on little pieces of whole wheat baggette , top it with some diced tomatoes , and feta. Then toss it in the oven for 5-10 minutes.

You're missing the key ingredient that gives it that classic hummus flavour, dude.
Tahini - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It ain't hummus without tahini.

BCguy, do you get the chic peas pre-cooked, or do you buy dry beans and cook them yourself? I really like the idea of making my own. That way I can get inventive with the spices and ingredients.

Cooking the dry beans takes for-freakin'-EVER. You'll do it once and go back to the canned ones like the rest of us.

i love cooking with dry beans. we have a co-op in my town that must sell 50 differant varieties of dried beans that are all organic and cheaper than any canned kind. Its just a matter of planning. Soak the beans overnight and cook them up later the next day. I know we all think we're so busy that we don't have time but most of us probably do.

I have never cooked my own beans. Is that like tossing your own salad ?
Yeah , and tahini ... i totally forgot to mention that. But in all honesty , its been awhile since i made it. My wife just buys tubs of it now from the store.

I used to make my own 9 bean mix and cook them from dry. I would cook enough for a week at a time. I don't do that much anymore.
I will have to see if Sam's has some big cans of Chic Peas for a good price. I tend to make a bunch of whatever I cook - about a weeks worth at a time if possible.

Thats kinda how I like to eat it ( not the triscuts thing ). This thread makes me hungry btw. When I lived in the mid west I went to Trader Joes all the time to get my hummus. Great snack that ends up to be a meal lol.

I eat it with the pita bread for breakfast at times, and a glass of skim milk for extra protein.
