What supplements do you use?
Just wondering what type of supplements some of you fighters take to stay in shape.
I usually take a protein shake such as EAS Myoplex after a workout or playing sports. I add some L-Glutamine which seems to work wonders on recovery time. Aside from that, just vitamins.
I know you fighters have to worry about gaining weight and that protein shakes can cause you to bulk up a little and put on muscle. Do you ever have a problem with this? What times of day do you find best to take supplements.
How do you feel about Creatine and similar supplements?

100% Whey Protien when I need to bulk up.. creatine monohydrate in pill form really does nothing for me except dehydrate me, never had the stuff do anything other than make me dehydrate.
I do however take about 6 grams (6000mg) of l-arginine a day, as well as amino acid chains, and every few months a combo of 7-keta DHEA and Tribulus terrestris as a stack.

this is a great forum, i am glad to see a place where we can discuss not only training, but supplements too. Awesome!
when i was cycling, boxing and weight training i had a list of supplements a mile long. EAS Myoplex, a good Whey protein powder, L-glutamine is something i recommend to all my friends who engage in weight training or any stressful activity. Creatine is awesome as well, but to avoid dehydration you have to drink more water than you usually would since it takes alot of water to process the stuff. i know i can lift more weight with more explosivness when i am on it. Vitamins are a must, even a basic multi works wonders. i don't know if this counts as a supplement but Green/White tea is on my list as well. helps clean the body of toxins. Green Tea is also known to increase metabolism and help burn fat.

Green tea is excellent, cant beleive I forgot that.. I just weaned myself of carbonated drinks and Green tea is about all I drink except for water. Try taking l-arginine for about a month, its just a simple element in your amino acid chain but it helps the body by aiding in oxygen transportation in blood cells, meaning you will be less sore after monster workouts and be able to get better oxygen to the brain in strenous situations. There are claims that it helps in muscular regeneration as well, but I am only going by the medically proven facts rather than calling ANYTHING an end all to end all.. might be good with what you mention. It has been amazing for my recovery times, and its really quite cheap to boot.

totally legal, its use is even allowed in IOC (international olympic comittee) rules, some of the strictest out there. You naturally get amino acids in certian foods, this is just helping your body to get a little more. The only real danger about amino acids is the danger about all acidic elements, even too much vitamin c... the extra acids in your stomach could lead to peptic ulcers, but you would need to consume an ungodly amount of them.
I have a feeling I will be spending an insane amount of time on this forum, I am the oddball guy who is into 90% herbal medicine and only go to the dr if something is dreadfully wrong

Tons of good info here, thanks guys.
When I started lifting I just changed my diet alittle bit to make sure Im getting enough protein. Friend of mine told me he used creatine but when he stopped he lost alot of what he gained. ANyone know the reason for this or if he did something wrong?
Also, what exactly does l-glutamine do?

Creatine increases your Muscles ability to retain water, making them bigger and stronger. When you stop taking it, your muscles begin to lose the capacity. I'm not an expert on this, but that is what I have gathered.
L-Glutamine is an amino acid that helps rebuild your muscles after a strenuous work out and improves recovery time.

Yeah, I was also looking at that one.
Anyone have any experience with those supplements (name escapes me) that improve your joints and supposedly will keep you from getting tapped out? Sounded too good to be true but they have alot of big names including Bas Rutten who use it.

I just try to eat several smaller meals a day. Then I take small set of calsium caseinate for the night. It is protein that takes longer for body to process than whey protein. So it helps body build muscle during the night. And after workout I take 15g of whey protein instantly and after 30min regular recovery drink and some creatine. In non-workout days I take same dose of creatine in the morning with some juice. And offcourse lots of water troughout the day.

No, its better for the body than eating an excess amount of raw meats to get the proper levels of protien and amino acids. I would rather take the pills than die at age 45 of cardivascular blockage from an ungodly amount of red meat consumption.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a professional boxer that feels the same way.
