Default Just bought a juicer

I bought a $40 juicer yesterday, and it's amazing. You can easily spend a hundred on one so this isn't a top of the line model by any stretch, but it still works well.

A lot of the nutrients in vegetables get lost when you cook them (plus there's the oil involved if you're stir-frying), but how many salads can a brother eat in one day?

Now I whip five carrots, three apples, half a pound of kale, some ginger and a few stalks of celery through this bad boy, and drink it down in seconds. The amount of fresh fruits and vegetables I'm getting now is through the roof, and I feel great.

Juicers are awesome!! i have one as well and its great. the only thing i hate about it is cleaning it. also, keeping fresh produce on hand can get expensive unless you have a garden. oh and the occasional experiment that leaves you sitting on the pot.

lol. Yeah, I've been a vegetarian for nearly fifteen years, so my body's pretty much used to lots of vegetables in various combinations, plus I've been taking a high-potency greens supplement for the past year or so, which was another thing my bowels had to get used to.

I agree that cleaning it is a big pain, but since it's a novelty I'm still whipping it out, juicing a big glass of something, and cleaning it a couple of times a day. I find it's easier if you just put the removable parts straight into a sink full of dishwater right away as opposed to walking away from it and thinking "I'll get to it later."

yeah, i know all about the "i'll get to it later" line of thinking. make a glass a jiuce and before i know it i am running late for work. i think having to clean a dirty juicer that has sat for 8 hours is one of the worst jobs in the world. good luck with the juicer!!! oh, do you use the pulp for anything or do you just toss it? i hear you can use it in baking breads.

So far (24 hours of ownership and three sessions of using it) I've just thrown the pulp out (well, our local recycling program has a "green box" for food scraps so it ends up getting composted -- not a total waste, at least). I feel kind of guilty about that, but I'm no baker so I know it'd never make it into bread or muffins. I can cook, I just don't bake. Maybe it could be a soup base or something? I'll google for hippie websites and there are probably tips.

I like my juicer a lot too, but it's such a pain in the ass with clean up.

I havn't thought about getting a juicer. I only eat steamed veggies, is this good enough?

Steaming's better than other forms of cooking. If you want to cook your vegetables, it's definitely the best way to preserve more of the nutrients, because it's heat that kills them, so direct contact with a hot frying pan does more damage than steaming. So yeah -- steaming is the healthiest way to cook your vegetables.

So, how much did you pay for Phil Baroni, and is he enjoying your apartment?

i always wondered with juicers if you needed to buy alot of the fruits to make a glass? it seems like youd need a ton but i guess that just goes with it... how many of X fruit do you need for a glass?

Well alot of it depends on the type of fruit you use.. apples, yeah, less usable fruit. Oranges, lots of pulp holding the juice but therefore less than it looks like. as a whole tho, its cheaper than buying juice and a lot better for you too.
