Story Highlights
• Inmate Curtis Allgier was at medical appointment at University of Utah
• A 60-year-old, 22-year law enforcement veteran was fatally shot in the head
• Inmate captured at Arby's restaurant after chase in carjacked vehicle
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) -- An inmate stole the gun from a corrections officer and shot him to death Monday when the prisoner was unshackled for a doctor's appointment, authorities said.
Curtis Allgier fled the University of Utah medical center on foot, carjacked a Ford Explorer and was captured miles away at an Arby's restaurant after a high-speed chase.
Allgier, whose face and neck are covered with tattoos including a swastika and the words "skin head" on his forehead, was in an examination room at the campus orthopedic center around 7:45 a.m., university Police Chief Scott Folsom said.
"There was some sort of altercation. The inmate got hold of the weapon and shot the officer," he said.
Stephen Anderson, 60, a 22-year-veteran, was shot in the head, authorities said.
Police stopped Allgier's vehicle by placing spikes in the road near the Arby's.
Inside the restaurant, at least one person was "struck with some object" but was able to walk out, bloodied around the head, Salt Lake City police Sgt. Rich Brede said.
Allgier, 27, was not armed when he was captured inside the manager's office, Brede said.
The Utah Department of Corrections routinely transports prisoners to the university for medical appointments. Allgier had lower back pain and was taken to the orthopedic center for an MRI. He was unshackled for the procedure, said Tresha Kramer, spokeswoman for the orthopedic center.
The procedure requires an officer to replace metal restraints with a plastic "flex cuff," Patterson said.
"We do not know exactly what happened" in the room, Tom Patterson, director of the Utah Department of Corrections, said.
Allgier was in prison on a parole violation. His criminal record includes burglary, forgery and at least one weapons crime, according to records.
Police arrived at the Arby's just as Shirley Smiley, 57, was outside after breakfast with her husband and son. She didn't see Allgier but heard a "popping noise" inside that was a gunshot.
Police yelled "get down!" and the three of them dropped to the ground in the parking lot, Smiley said.

A similar incident took the life of a good friend and co-worker of mine a few years ago. He was watching an inmate in the hospital who was supposedly very ill and near death. The inmate beat him in the head, took his gun and while my friend lay unconscious, shot him twice before fleeing. He didn’t even get out of the parking lot of the hospital before he was apprehended. I don’t understand why some states allow transports and hospital duty with only one officer. We always send two, one armed and one unarmed so that the inmate never gets close enough to the armed officer to get his weapon.

Everybody needs to take a step back and calm down, the comment Vegas made may have been an ill taste to some people but I'm sure he didn't mean it to be offensive.

Same chit happened in our department. Fella was in on obstructing/assault police, felony weapons charges etc....he was goin away for a while. The guy was a serious alchoholic, he was in hospital due to liver damage.
He went for the officers gun, officer stopped him, slapped the dog chit outa him and charged him.
Friggin circuit court let the dude off due to his medical condition. The guys wife is a doctor, she had other doctors state the prisoner was gonna die within the year so the judge/prosecutor dropped charges. I personally think it was a big skam. Yes he had liver damage but I dont think the guy was near death.

That story sucks. Freakin MIke Tyson wannabe face tat.
I had to trasport a high escape risk prisoner to Santa Cruz when I worked at the jail several years ago. Santa Cruz is spooky in the sense it'd be a perfect place to escape cause it's surrounded by semi-mountainous hills that are easy to get lost in. Anyway, this momo tried to fake a heart attack so I took him solo to the ER. I was only on the dept for like a year and a half. He was shackeled and all then stared me down on the walk-in to the ER (remember he supposedly was having a heart attack), and I said to him
"Remember, CA has a fleeing felon rule. YOu flee, I can homicide your ass. Oh BTW, I'm a qualified Sharpshooter, and no offense, I will not miss if you run. Youre just another paper target to me bro!"
Needless to say his little 2 hour fake heart attack lame mental game escape attempt didn't work.

Ya this isn't very funny Vegas. Someone gets killed by where I live and you like to make jokes about it?
I also don't appreciate being called a murderer.

I do believe Vegas did not mean to insult you, TICL. But I'd be pissed, too, if I were you.
Let's not make childish comparisons anymore so nobody feels offended.

hey ticl sorry if i offended you, but i still stand by the fact that when i saw that guy the first thing i thought of was you with your tattoo thread.
hey why don't we get a mod to lock this thread, i thought that some people would like to hear the news, but i guess the people here only care about mma news.
anyway you guys need to chillax a little. life is too short to get all pissy about what i wrote.
again ticl i'm sorry if i offended you that was not my intent.
