Does soccer piss anyone else off?
I used to be a big fan, i even had a season ticket at United for a good number of years. Looking back, I dont know why I liked it.
I firmly believe it is sky's hype that makes people believe they love it! They make every game seem like WW3 with highlight reels and stuff! When you actually watch a game, about 5 mins of action actually takes place! It is so boring when you compare it to Rugby, hurling, gaelic football, and NFL! Only in soccer can a coach say "a scoreless draw was a good result!"
What pisses me off the most is the amount of attention that is heaped on it! Take this weekend! Sky sports news was FULL of footage of meaningless pre-season friendlies! Vazquez and Marquez took part in one of the greatest wars i have seen in recent years! Erik Morales, a warrior and a true great announces his retirement also happened this weekend! I turn on sky sports to see that this news was given the scrolling text treatment! But no, lets check out how Man United's C team got on against Chesterfield for the next 30 mins!
I suppose this is my frustration with todays society and media really. I just cant see how Boxers and MMA fighters, who train harder than any other athlete, put their bodies through more, risk their lives and are involved in sports that even at their worst provide more drama and action than an entire season of soccer, get looked over while a bunch of over-paid, diving girls get all the coverage! The only fighters who get main-stream coverage this side of the pond are Hatton and Calzaghe! In ireland, thankfully its a bit better as Bernard Dunne, John Duddy and Andy Lee are household names. Boxing is also taught in most schools over here.
The Rugby World Cup is coming up in a month! On the news yesterday? Nothing!! Why?? No! Apparantly the charity shield is more important! You dont see rugby players "roasting" girls, making fun of american tourists after 9/11 or "forgetting" drug tests. Plus its a much more exciting game to watch! And I dont even understand it!

i have always hated watching soccer. but its that way with alot of sports that are actually games where you have to score points and are limited in how you can score or move on a playing field. games that have more options such as American Football are a little better since you can pass, run, kick etc.. this is why MMA is really the only sport i care to follow, it offers an incredible amount of diversity and outcomes.

I don't like football because I've never been fast or agile, and was terrible at it as a kid. I was better at rugby and hockey.
Plus I hated people pretending they knew more than they did because they were trying to be cool. Worst of all to my mind is women fans who've never kicked a ball in their life. How can they like football? It's obvious they just like the hype and 'team spirit' which to my mind is just going yaay because everyone else is. It just seems like a pethetic attempt to 'belong', which is just deluding yourself imo.
What is so special about running back and forth and dancing your feet about, I'm much more impressed by mma, powerlifting and lots of other sports.
I admit I like watching woman tennis just to cheer on the Williams sisters, because they're hot, though.

whats so impressive about lifting a wieght?
thats the counter arguement, the football purist can say that there are skills both physical and tactically on the football pitch that is unriveled elsewhere. unless you have a team that you devote your saturday to, you are angry when they loose, you sit and shout at players to pass a ball when you are watching it on tv like they can hear you, you will watch a division 3 team play just because its football.
football isnt just a sport its a whole sociological lifestyle choice, it buids community, seperates communities, it is a matter of life and death, its what makes you look forward to the weekend.
iv started playing 11 aside football again and im telling you i love it, i look forward to it, and although it may be a kickabout in the park and mean nothing i treat it like its the world cup final.
Saying a sport pisses yu off is all fair and well but remember that your views arnt always shared by everyone else, thats the beauty of sport and even football. I hope MMA makes it to footballs level and if it does il love it, football is the worlds top sport for a reason tho.

Soccer is very very boring to me. I don't get angry about it though. I do terribly despise televised gambling of any type.
Baseball and golf are boring too. Either is good to have running on the telly whilst I nap on the sofa though. I guess soccer would be too, but I don't want to give it the ratings.

To be fair Kale, The Irish call it "soccer" too. Just because we call Gaelic football "football" and it would get confusing! Its the same reason Americans call it soccer. Their football is what we call American Football or Gridiron
Nimmy, saying it divides communitys is true to Glasgow because of the religion issue but the same degree of animosity between couldnt apply to other "derby" towns! I think Glasgow is an exceptional case. Soccer is popular because it is deeply ingrained in British society as it is a working class sport. However, as time goes on, and the game gets more and more saturated with money, the average man on the street has less and less in common with the players.
My arguement is basically that, in my opinion if you take away the hype and tradition, as a sport, soccer is an extreamly boring, where very little happens.
