Barbarism?
Well I am currently at my folks house, I watched the tuf finale last night. They didn't sit and watch it with me, as he walked through the tv room I noted the look on the face of my father. The fight was the bloody one with Jrod(the Mr. T looking guy?) and his opponent. It was towards the tail end and of course he missed the fortitude the one guy showed to win it. At the comercial I went and asked him what was up he said he just wasn't into that. I said cool and asked why, he of course came back with the reply of its a barbaric barroom brawl. I pointed to the rules and the controls they have then he came back with well it is an unrealistic situation.
Has anyone else run into this contradiction of the person saying it is to barabric and yet not "real" enough at the same time? What arguments do you try and use to get a person to at least look at whats going on?

No, but I've come across the barbaric word. Barroom brawl...that's kinda old school.
Does he watch boxing? Football?

People who say that make me so mad.
I just wanna rip out their intestines and eat their face.
Calling my sport barbaric, will ya.
But seriously, I don't usually argue anything to people with those kinds of views.
Seems pointless imo. Like trying to convince a creationist that he's dead wrong.
However, I'll gladly edumacate people who aren't that negative to begin with.

BTW Switch. Most people in life deny what is real most of the time. Nobody wants to admit the truth whether it be about themselves, their significant others, their situation, and of course MMA.
So, it's a denial thing. The blood and guts isnt your dads thing, and that's cool. Him saying it's not real enough is really him saying that he knows it's real but it's too brutal for his taste to contemplate that people actually do that professionally.
At least that's just what I think.

I find people either like watching fights or they don't. The people who are on the fence about it tend to get turned off when the blood starts to flow or one guy is taking a serious beating. the people who make me the most angry are the ones who say "i could beat him, i'd just shoot him." . I really hate that.

Haha, yeah. Youd be amazed at how many people have said that line to me....
I usually just talk about MMA being the purest form of competition, man on man etc.
And Gooner, was that stab at religion really necessary earlier?

If we are going to defend mma from individuals claiming barabrism, we should be civil with each other. Hey Gooner, I dig your banner, but maybe it's time to let SubG off the hook?

You know how long I've been waiting for that title shot BJ's getting?
The sig's gonna be even better with BJ getting the belt on his waist.

I respect your tenacity. It's difficult to take the foot from the throat once planted.
On a serious note: let's have some intellectual and spiritual empathy. Ridiculing a religion should be as politically incorrect as race. Whatever your belief, respect others.

Well he watches Football fairly regularly and has on occasion watched boxing. I don't think the blood is neccessary the issue. The guy is a Vietnam Vet and has 16 years as an EMT under his belt so not really to squimishy about blood. I have noticed a trend sometimes with people who have been trained for combat that they don't consider MMA to be a "real" situation and think it is foolish to train/watch it. The interesting thing is that I am a combat vet myself and I am able to firmly place MMA in a sports category that I would use minimally if at all on a battlefield.
As for any violence to him one he is my father two it doesn't do any good to try and beat your views into someone. I am sure some here have dealt with family who have issues with MMA be curious to see how others solve them.

When i used to watch MMA at my parents my father would always say how easy it would be to beat those guys with a gun. I stopped trying to explain to him the sporting side of fighting long ago. I think people either see it for what it is, or not at all. I still hear guys talking about how "gay" the sport is. i suppose you can only educate those who are interested in learning.
