Yeah, thanks for the heads up Krav. I was thinking about seeing it just because I had no idea what it was about. I'll wait for DVD.

It was released straight to video just a few weeks before Cloverfield was released in theaters. It is a complete rip-off. I do not have it backwards because release dates are well-known in advance (sometimes a year before). The Japanese film ("The Monster") was not released in theaters. But, this is not unusual. It is not like this has never happened before.
Studios in America do this a lot. They hear another studio is making a Titanic film, and so they rush to get one out first (yes, that actually happned, and the other Titanic was released on TV). At the same time that Twister was in theaters, the USA network had Tornado on TV.
This is different from the American remakes of Japanese films that we have seen so much of lately. The American remakes have been made a year or more after the original Japanese film has had a run in theaters. The Grudge and The Eye are two good examples.

Saw it on Saturday. Wow what an amazing movie. There's no way you can compare the camera work in this movie to the one in "The Blair Witch Project" I thought I was going to bust into a seizure during that movie.
Cloverfield 9.9/10

But people also like American Idol & care about Paris Hilton.
I haven't seen Cloverfield...from what I've read, it doesn't look like my cup of tea.

I have a question about this movie..do you ever get to see a full clear view of the monster? Or do you only get glimpses and never actually see it?

They do give several clear views of the monster. One of them I posted in a .GIF earlier in this thread.

Yeah but in that GIF it was kind of blurry, you know? But it's good to hear that actually get to see it. It would kind of suck to sit through the whole movie and never see the monster.
EDIT: I just noticed that 2nd GIF you posted. Is the monster on the side of a plane or something? How was the monster big enough to tear down skyscrapers and yet small enough to stick to the side of a plane???

That .GIF was taken from a cell phone pointed at the screen. Look at the .GIF again. What looks like a window is actually the movie screen in the theater. That scene is one from the movie where Hud (aka Hudson, the "guy with the camcorder" in the movie) is looking straight up at the monster while standing directly below it. Needless to say, Hud is scared ****less. This monster eats people.

That's why I think that Cloverfield is actually a horror film first. It uses suspense and some Alien (1979) type tricks where they do not show the monster immediately. But, by the end, it's clear what the monster is and has been doing.
Compare Cloverfield to most any other giant monster films and it was filmed and displayed differently. It did not look like a guy in a suit stomping cardboard buildings, LOL. In this day of CGI and The Matrix and all that, a giant monster film has to be well done.
One thing that I noticed about Cloverfield dealt with whether or not the monster itself had been original. In the American Godzilla movie, the monster somehow gives birth to tiny, man-sized mini-Godzillas (Godzilli? Or, Godzookies, LOL). In Cloverfield, the monster somehow gives birth to tiny, man-sized monsters, called "parasites" in the film. Both are bent on eating people. Alien (1979) also dealt with that idea. So, some of the story ideas are not so original.

If you had to rate Cloverfield, on a scale of 0(being absolute crap) and 5(being totally awesome) what would you rate it?

I sat in the front row and thought it was the best movie I've seen in about 5 to 10.

I would rate Cloverfield as a 4.0 or a 4.5 on that scale.
