Good region free DVD player?
Just wondering what you guys use as your region free player of choice (to those of you with JPN Region 2 dvds). I usuallly just use VLC media player on my computer to bypass the region check alltogather, but sometimes I would like to watch stuff on my tv without having to go thru the process of rip/decss and then reburn at region 0. Anyone?

I dont have a region free dvd player yet, but I really need to get one. I ruined a dvd player I had. I got several DVD's in Afghanistan, or actually they are rip offs and called VCD'd. I got spiderman and starwars episode II on VCD within a week of them being released in theaters and it was pretty good quality. Anyway, I got home and decided Id watch a few of the movies I got...after about the 3rd one or the 5th one, some option came up about regions on the screen....i just picked one and didnt really pay attention to what it said since I didnt know much about it at the time. Anyway, needless to say it wouldnt play any of my DVD's I had from the states anymore. Had to get a new DVD player.

I got what I thought was a really cheap DVD player from Yamakawa (DVD-238). This thing plays EVERYTHING! My computer with all it's region setting, copyright protection bypass, and other things won't play some thing that the DVD player will. It plays all regions I've tried, all pic formats on DVD or CD, any music file, etc. I got lucky on this one!

If you have a DVD-RW drive on your comp, you can simply load it to your HDD while removing all the encryption/region coding stuff in the process, than burn the movie to DVD-R.
Then you can play it back in your player.
If you don't have a DVD-RW drive, GET ONE. They're fairly cheap these days and easy to install.

I got a Sony DVD burner off eBay for 30 bones plus shipping. It works flawlessly. I remember when I almost spent about $300 for one of these contraptions.

I donīt even use a stand alone dvd player, I got a cable from graphic card ( TV-Out or S-VHS OUT) going to my TV. Why waste money on a DVD player, when I got one in my PC. Itīs even better if you get Windows Media Center Edition, your PC turns into a super digital entertainment system and you can remote control everything on your PC and watch it all on your TV. If you have a TV Card you can use the PC to record shows/movies/whatever on your Harddrive and then burn them. To bypass region codes, I use Power DVD 5, or VLC Player like Aika.
For those who donīt want to pay the 10 bucks for such a cable, and rather have a stand-alone player.. DVP642 for $50 plays anything ( Region Free/mpg4/xvid/divx...blah blah blah). XORO HSD 4000 is also very good. By the way if you guys have dvd players with region locks (most lock up after playing a certain region 5 times) try checking out various sites which offer DVD codes. They are usually codes that unlock the region again. Check out this site. http://www.dvdexploder.com/multihacks
