how is that "entry exam" idea coming along? did'nt Guile say that new members would be required to pass a basic knowledge quiz before having posting priviledges?

you could have a gatekeeper mod
well, i would think that anyone wanting to be a member would first browse the site to learn alittle MMA. the questions obviously would'nt be too tough. you could do, Who won TUF 1? it'd be multiple choice. i see what you're saying though about some people being generally interested in MMA and not knowing anything not being able to join. it does pose a problem.

It sucks, but maybe have a set up where the first ten posts from a new member have to be approved. It makes extra work for mods and admins, but it would force new members to have to post within the guidelines of the forum before exposing themselves as spammers.
Set it up so they don't know the posts need approval until they make that first post, then they are busted. The spam never hits the forums. Or, make it so they do know they need approval. That usually makes spammers look elsewhere for a forum that is not moderated.

what about simply blocking a users ability to post links? what good is spam if they can't link to thier junk? 10 decent posts and you get the privledge of linking to other sites.

That is a good idea. Although, I am not sure that it can be set up that way. Different forums have different features. Post approval seems to be one that is standard among many of the various forum applications.

i was just trying to think of the easiest way to prevent spam while putting the least burden on the mods.

Isn't it true that the term "spam" came from a Monty Python sketch comedy bit (back in like 1972) where they literally say spam like a hundred times? It was a diner scene and everything on the menu had spam in it.
