Football (Soccer) Riots.
I have always been fascinated by the phenommenon of Soccer Riots in the world, mostly in Europe. I know we have quite a few British, German, and other Europeans in Fight Forum and I'm just curious if you've ever been in one or participated in these nasty knock down drag out fights in these stadiums.
One thing the Europeans and the world for that matter have us Americans beat in is the building of huge Soccer stadiums. These things look like they hold 100 or 200 thousad people. And if they all start fighting?
WTF? I mean don't all 200 thousand of you get scared or something that basically an entire mid-size city is all going at it with fists/feet/ and pieces of the stand?
To all you Hooligans out there! More power to ya during these things!

football hooliganism isnt cool in todays game. many clubs have been banned from competition for riots. my teams rivals are under investigation for rioting and sectarianism at football.
last month a police officer in italy died as a result of a riot.
over the years many fans have died at fotball grounds, most noteably liverpool vs juventus in the 80s when several fans died. all english clubs were banned from european competition as a result.
many clubs have their own associated "firm" or "casuals" organised groups of people who meet on matchdays for an organised fight.
many of the firms are based on race hate mods or political or religeous divides, such as the lazio ultras who are a right wing movement in comparison the the fc Roma left side.
Celtic (my club) is a catholic clubs and hosted some of the worlds most brutal riots in the 1970s against the protestand glasgow rangers. many deaths have occured.
in england 3 notebale football hooligan groups are recognised the combat 18 group assocated to chelsea are racist mob associated with the nazi party * the 18 stands for letters in the alphabet a and h, hitlers initials). other groups include MIllwall a small and unsuccesful club in lower divisions but has a fearsome reputation, and also west ham uniteds greenstreet mob.
south american football howver holds some of the worst football hooligans to date with the rivalry between river plate and boca juniors accounting for many many riots in the football stadium

when people fight and riot in the name of a sports team i shake my head. its total crap, first off it ruins the game, secondly its just an excuse for violence. while we don't really have Soccer Hooligans in the US we do have out fair share of idiots that riot when the local sports team loses. they break stuff, burn stuff, flip cars and do all the other general mayhem that comes along with rioting. of course some people take it further and rape or inflict other serious bodily harm all because they are upset that the Patriots did with the SuperBowl. pretty lame, can you imagine UFC fans rioting after a show? i mean they should have during that Jordan v. GOnzage fight but its just not part of the sport or any sport. people should be able to go to an event without worrying about some screwball kicking them in the back when thier team loses. Hell, they riot when thier teams win. its just an excuse to be bad and to me thats no excuse at all.

Stadiums in the UK hold from a few thousand upto around 100,000 people when Wembly is built. Most people who visit events are normal people and are there to see the match. Small minorities like fighting and have made groups like Nimmy said. There used to be many fights in stadiums but now it generally happens in the street and normal fans normally get away freely. Its slowly getting stopped by the police (they lead fans from the train to the stadium and back now, etc to try and stop them fighting). But there are still some idiots who find a way to fight.
So it never involves thousands of people generally just a fair few hundred.

Crash, I myself have been to almost all the UFC events in Vegas and honestly am impressed just how well behaved the fans are. There is some smack talking by drunk idiots, but for the most part, the fans are there to watch the fighters fight, not each other.
And the minute something crazy goes down? At least in Vegas? Security and Vegas Metro PD are on it or them faster than flies on ****!
That's why I tend only to attend the Vegas events.

Everyone in England follows football. (My pet peeve is girls who've never kicked a ball, watching just to talk about how cute the players are.) Every boy is required by law to spend the entirety of their break playing football, even if they are fat or girly. Cricket, Rugby, Racing and other sports are watched much less.
England has football firms where America has gangs. Just because Football is so important.
(Kids aren't really required by law, but they might as well be)

Tell me about it!! The absolute worst is being in a pub when the world cup is on! Having to listen to idiots, who havent a bull's notion what they are talking about, shouting stuff up at the big screen.
I'll never forget, the last world cup, I was in Manchester watching England v Portugal! The camera showed Beckham placing the Ball down for a free-kick. All these eejits started roaring stuff like "Go on Becks, back of the net mate etc" The camera panned out and Beckham was about 2 yards inside his own half!!!

Oh and in relation to the thread, I was a little kid in lansdowne road in '95 for the Ireland v England game. Ireland went 1-0 up through David Kelly and all of a sudden the English lads (Combat 18) started tearing up the seats in the East stand upper tier and tossing them down on top of the Irish. It all kicked off then, the riot police came steaming in with truncheons and stuff. The game had to be abandoned. I was with my Uncle Den, luckily in the South stand, behind the goal. I remember being terrified though! There were riots in the city centre after the game too

Nope. Just intellectual curiousity as to the mentality of that many people freakin out over a game and fighting.
I mean you can only blame a certain amount on alchohol. I think Nimmy was very descript in pointing out that a lot of it is racial tensions amongst different groups.
To me riots in America are low level street thug disturbances which usually get quelled quite effectively. But Soccer Riots?
Even the best cops in the world would have a difficult to impossible time maintaining order in one of those stadiums once 100 thousand or so people are start throwin.
I'm not encouraging it, but I say cheers to any innocent people stuck in a riot like that, who had to fight their way out.

Although we started it all off, I think by far (mainly Eastern) Europe has the worse problem with hooliganism. A lot of firms over there are heavily into right-wing politics and neo-nazi idealogies. Obviously some of the UK firms are into that as well, but it seems to be more prominent on the continent. Here's some videos I found on Youtube:
And keeping it a bit closer to home, here's a news story about a Chelsea v Milwall game from the 90's. Both Chelsea and Milwall have pretty hardcore firms:

As a German I think I know some about it although I do not go to soccer games at all. Several hours before a game is on, you see the fans (drunk, yelling, singing) on their way using the subway. Only few of them are obviously hooligans, they are "active" once the game is over.
Most people over here are scared of them, the whole situation. When those groups are on the subway station, you see women standing next to walls ready to run away whenever they feel they are in danger.
Fortunately they have never provoked or attacked me. They come in groups and have lots of beer bottles with them.

one of germanys craziest football fans are the st paulis fans, they are a mixture of transexuals, holligans and lunatics
