1. Hopefully thats not in response to me because I never said they didn't try to get somebody. I never posted that they didn't try to get someone worthy. In fact, I posted that I understood why they ended up with who they did. I simply don't see the point in building the opponent into something he isn't.

2. Why would EliteXC, who has first refusal on any fight offered to Diaz under his contract, allow him to fight on short notice? A loss to Aoki would further hurt Diaz's worth to EliteXC coming off the loss to KJ Noons.

3. Honestly, I'll wait for a more established source to that claim. It might very well be true, but the organizers may have thrown offers all over to guys like Diaz, Nick Thompson, or Jake Shields for all we know, knowing they'd get "no"" for an answer.

The biggest missing piece, not so much to this particular story as to the NYE events in general, is where is Takanori Gomi in all of this?

Gomi is contract disputes and stuff. And Nick Thompson actually made a thread at mma.tv the other day saying he wants to fight Aoki on NYE, and said he emailed monte cox about it.

Also, SKYPerfect's saturation rate, although deeper than WOWOW, is still shockingly low.. this event will be fun for us MMA fans but will make about as much money as Inoki Bom Ba Yae 2003 did.

I keep hearing how this event will be on TBS. But, my DVR guide has sitcoms and movies scheduled all night on NYE. What's up with that? Is there another TBS out there?

sokoudjou had like 3 previous fights against a couple cans. And i had to say that about JZ, because everybody was whining about how the japanese people do this on purpose, when that was completely false, oh and BTW Bukyunf is a better option then a shooto fighter nobody in japan even knows.

I guess you haven't seen much of Glover Texeira. If he put his mind to training hard, the guy could be a stud. And he's the one who destroyed the guy who KO'd Arona and Lil Nog. He's no can. And three MMA fights is a heck of a lot better than zero.

So making a lie about JZ is okay because people are criticizing the way that promoters are doing things? First off, please show me one post in this thread before you posted where "everybody was whining about how the japanese people do this on purpose". No one was saying a word about the promoters. But you come in and lie about JZ. Anyway, people are allowed to have their opinions on how promoters run their events. Spreading complete lies about a fighter is fighter bashing.

And why would it have to be a complete nobody Shooto fighter? Rumino Sato would not be worthy? Someone else ranked? It seems to me that Aoki would welcome giving another Shooto fighter the exposure seeing as thats where he came from. At this point, his fight is not scheduled to be televised on TBS (only the Fedor and Akiyama fights are), so fighting an inexperienced judoka is not gonna help the event's ratings. I hope Bu-Kyung Jung shows well and defeats Aoki. But it likely won't happen.

If you read the very first post, I understand why they are putting him in, with such short notice. But once again, lets not build him into a legitimate contender with no professional MMA fights under his belt.

Yet many times you expound apon Shooto. Trust me, a Shooto fighter would have made for a better matchup but as for tv ratings the celeb wins.

Did Sokoudjou have any MMA fights previous to the Nogueira fight, as opposed to being a complete rookie?

I thought you said he'd be fighting JZ anyway, being that JZ was just holding out for more money and a different round structure, all while faking an injury?

little to no ground game? hes a olympic medalist. Oh and BTW same thing was said about Sokoudjou when he fought lil nog, alot of people thought that fight shouldnt have been sanctioned. And they didnt pick a no name shooto fighter because olympic medalist in judo = very popular in japan. Also losing in the olympic finals to Tadahiro Nomura is no shame considering hes one of the best judokas on the planet.

A silver medalist 7 years ago at 132lbs, has never been punched in the face in a professional fight, and as far as we know, has little to no ground game. Yes, Aoki should submit him like nothing.

This is basically an exhibition match. As most have pointed out, including RockemSockem, you can't expect much more from the organizers at this late stage. But lets not try to build it up as a real test for Shinya. If he were to lose, this would be no different than a complete amateur out boxing a guy like Manny Pacquiao. It should never happen. And with the vast depth of lightweight talent in Japan, you can't tell me there aren't well rounded guys all over the Shooto roster that wouldn't have jumped at a chance to challenge Aoki, even on short notice, rather than an inexperienced bantamweight.

Cacti, you are building up Aoki's opponent less than a week after accusing JZ of holding out for more money, accusing him of faking his surgeries, and stating that the JZ vs Aoki fight was still going to happen on NYE.

BTW, this fight is now official.

All of which were fighter bashing as well as false accusations for the record.. Gygax said it best and I think there is no further discussion needed, its a last minute fight, its an exibition match, and altho he has a medal from the olympics.. that doesnt translate well to MMA in many cases. Grappling, and grappling while having your face pounded like Paris Hilton on a saturday night are two very different things.

Bu-Kyung Jung. According to Sports Navi (Yahoo Japan), JZ Calvancante's replacement for the fight against Shinya Aoki will be Bu-Kyung Jung, a 2000 Olympic Judo Silver Medalist. Jung has never had a sanctioned MMA bout and won the medal in the 132lb weight class at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Considering how short notice this fight will be set up on, its not surprising that Aoki will get such a creampuff for competition. The organizers simply do not have enough time to find a more suitable opponent.
