Default Surprised on the lack of Pride talk here

Are there no fans of Pride here? This thread is dying compared to the UFC and Boxing thread. What up?

Not a fan of Pride's somewhat fishy favortism of japanese fighers when it comes to decision and when it comes to repositioning, too much bias for my tastes. I watch Bushido from time to time as it is quite a bit better rules-wise, but have only seen the past 3 events.

I am more of a UFC fan and I don't get to follow Pride much. You are right though, we need some topic starters.

I am trying to get a link from the Official Pride site to here, which would help a ton, but they haven't replied and I doubt they will. We'll see.

I hear ya Danny. Not a lot of love for pride around here. I'm a big fan of pride and there just isn't a lot of discussion about it yet. As the board grows in size, I believe the discussions will pick up. I think a lot of the posters on this board got into the UFC from watching TUF so they haven't really been exposed to it.

But I'm always down to discuss pride so go ahead and post some thoughts. I tried a few a threads with limited success, but we can help it grow.

Pride events are on PPV but since they are based in Japan, there is usually a time delay from when it happens to when in airs on US PPV. Sometimes its a day, somettimes its a week or two. It varies from event to event. But since there is a delay, Pride edits the events so that every fight airs on the PPV. The full fight, not just the highlights.

Rules are similar to the UFC with a few noted differences. Number one would be the most obvious, which is Pride takes place in a ring instead of a cage. Kicks, stomps, and knees are all legal in Pride events, even to a downed opponent. Elbows on the ground are not legal in pride.

Give it a try, you will like it. I got into MMA the same way most people did, by watching the UFC. But once I saw Pride, I was hooked as well. A lot of people will argue that Pride is one step up from UFC. I'm not interested in debating whether that is true or not, but it should give you an idea of the qualtiy of the organization.

The only down side to Pride for me is when a PPV is on a week delay or something. It's difficult to stay off the forums and read the results, but it is definitely worth it. The next pride event is the second round of the middleweight grand prix. It is taking place on June 26th but doesn't air on US PPV until July 1st. So from the 26th to 1st, I will hopefully not be frequenting this forum.

If you don't want to watch a PPV, just go out to Best Buy or something and pick up a few DVDs. I promise, you won't regret it.

I would give Bushido a try, since its mostly smaller weight classes and the UFC has had a lack of that lately. I do like the fact that the Bushido PPV is cheaper than the UFC PPV

Bushido rounds are also set up differently than the UFC, so you rarely have to worry about decision issues.. well, usually not

I get sick of the Grand Prixs every year but Belfort was in this one so I was happy. But I'm awaiting Fedor verses Crocop. I also think that the ring looks and is a little better than the octagon. The only problem is that the octagon has more room to work with which is a plus in my book.

Oh and UFC is one up because they don't have the lame blue colored gloves. Black is a lot more professional looking in my opinion.

But having Bas do the commentary makes the blue gloves bearable.. the only man who can predict a tapout before it comes and at the same time mention his love for eating marmalade.. I think I would watch horses take a **** just to hear what Bas would say

Thanks. Ill definitely check it out but arent there more fighters in the ufc that most people have heard of or are the same mma fighters alternating in both? I ask because i hear of fighters competing in one then moving to the other.

It depends what you mean by "more people have heard of." US fans have heard of the UFC fighters more because it is a US based promotion. But on a global scale I would venture to say that Pride fighters are as well known, if not more so. And yes, there are a number of instances where fighters switch organizations. Usually they go from the UFC to Pride because Pride pays a little better. Hopefully with MMA starting top get more popular, Zuffa will be able to pay the fighers better and we won't see that happen as much.

Also, a reason why DSE (Pride) pays better than UFc is because Pride is very mainstream over in Japan. It's a lot like boxing for the Us except not as oversaturated. But the cool thing is that during the Pride's GP they usually get a UFC representive. Chuck Liddell and Vitor Belfort were representives. I also think wasn't Yves Edwards a representive at the last Bushido?

He was, they even played the UFC intro music when he made his entry.

Speaking of saturation, one thing I like about the Bushido events is the fact that you have Japanese, American, Brazillian, South Korean.. all sorts of countries represented. The UFC has fighters from all around the world as well, but not as deep as Pride seems to.

Plus.. the announcer.. hes freakin CRAZY!!!!

(half screamed like a cat half sung all around insane)
*IN DA RED CORNER.. FROM JAPAAN.. TAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII----SHOOOOOOOOO"

Love that guy.

Nope Pride is a little bigger and better. But UFC dominates the Welterweight and Middleweight divisions. Pride dominates the Heavyweight division and kinf of the LHW. I perfure UFC's with Couture, Ortiz, Liddell, Babalu, Belfort, etc. But Pride has Jackson, Wandy, Shogun, etc. I give it to Pride.

I'm quite divided really I love both events

PRIDE has a greater depth of talent in the light heavies and the heavyweights.
I love the tournaments the 2003 middleweight Gramp Prix is the best MMA event I've seen by a country mile although it definately helped that Chuck was in it.

The UFCs have got stronger recently though
If you love Chuck in the UFC you'll love Wandy Silva in PRIDE

My only beef with PRIDE is they have alot of Asian fighters who are completely overmatched although its funny to see Silva smash them all the time

I prefer the UFC coverage i like the MTV type style but PRIDE has Bas who is the greatest fight pundit ever

If your a UFC fan you should be a PRIDE fan and vice versa

I haven't had the pleasure of seeing that many Pride events. A few, very few. The UFC is just the most popular "Where I live anyways." Just not that many people talk about here. I mean hear as in where I live.

Talking Japanese Annoucers

One of my favorite things about Pride are the announcers. The entrance lady who has that real calm voice and then just snap off in that japanese sort of way. Same thing with the ring announcer who introduces the fighters starts off really calm and slow then just goes insane. I love it I'll take those Japanese announcers over lame ass Bruce Buffer any day.

Yeah, he is about as dull as c-span compared to the Pride announcers
