Well, its not roids, but it is marijuana and it is a banned substance. For someone like Nick, who wants to be taken seriously as a fighter, risking a suspension to smoke weed doesn't make sense to me. He knew the consequences and did it anyway.

Agreed. He goes on and on about wanting to be taken serious, getting in magazines and such. I guess we didn't realize he wanted to be in High Times.

We have talked about this before and there are good discussions about this issue and why pot is tested and why some members including myself think its stupid because pot is not performance enhancing, and others think since a substance is against the law that it should be tested. Search around if you want more viewpoints because I am about to get on my soapbox.. which is very small and from the Dollar store so I may fall down quickly.
Personally, I think smoking pot is a personal choice. It has nothing to do with boosting performance, it has nothing to do with cheating.. it should not disqualify anyone nor make them potentially suspended for 6 months. Pot makes some people laugh, other people are able to better focus when high.
Sure, you may be tested at your job for pot, you may be tested by your athletic comission for pot.. but pot as a whole is nothing but a plant. It does not make you superman like PCP. It does not speed you up like meth. It does not give you an unfair advantage like HGH or blood doping. It just makes Sanford and Son irresistable. I am for decrim of marijuana so that the law enforcement community can focus on methamphetamines, which are destroying towns around me and lives of people left and right. I think the open jail cells after removing minor pot offenders could lead to stricter penalties on dealers and manufactors of hard drugs, drugs that destroy lives and familys.. go after heroin, go after cocaine, go after MDMA, ya know?

Pass it to the left next time Nick!
"Can I get a hit of your weed? Can I get a hit of your weed?" - Cypress Hill
Oh and I agree Aika. I have yet to see a violent crime committed while high on reefer. I've never tried it, but really think alot of law enforcement's time is wasted on weed investigation. And, let me give you an inside tidbit.
Half the weed the cops confiscate? Usually ends up missing. Then it comes across my freakin desk as Internal Affairs as to why. And you want to know why?
Cause either the officer(s) and the evidence techs ARE STEALING IT FOR THEMSELVES!

I think those are great arguments Aika. Here's how Ken Kizer, the NSAC chairman would respond, directly from that article.
Quote:
|
Regarding the subject of marijuana use among mixed martial artists in general, Kizer said to MMAWeekly last month, "The main issue with marijuana is it slows the reflexes, putting the fighter at much greater risk. We would not let a fighter compete who is coming off arm surgery and has not fully recovered his reflexes, or who is under the influence of alcohol because of the same issue. Additionally, it may also deaden some pain. That could hurt the fighter... he may not tap out when he should and he suffers broken bones or torn ligaments as a result... or that could unfairly help him if he can trade punches more easily with his opponent."
|
I thought it was amusing that Nick did not want to take the test to begin with. He knew he was going to fail the test.
Like I said, your arguments are valid. But as long as the rules are what they are, he broke them knowingly. Thats a shame.

Wow. I agree with Ken to an extent.. if the marijuana is active in the bloodstream yes it can be very unfair to use. The thing is, it could have been smoked one day ago or one week ago.

That's where I have a problem with Kizer's argument. How far back does the NSAC's particular testing go for marijuana? His argument would likely be a positive test shows a habit, which is garbage.

who gives a rats. It's not like nick was high during the fight and it's not a performance enhancing drug. Some laws are stupid, like jaywalking a little street or backing your car out of the drive way. War all pot heads on the nick "reefer smoker" diaz bandwagon.

Its not just MMA fighters. Every sport that has drug testing tests for marijuana. Baseball, hockey, boxing, basketball, Olympic sports, football, etc. They all test.

It is if he gets tested, tests positive, and gets fined or suspended. I don't think weed's a big deal either, but in Nick Diaz' profession, it gets treated like one. He knew the rules, and he f**ked up.

Who cares why he did it. The fact is he took a substance that he knew was banned. Whether or not weed should be banned is a whole other arguement but IMO until it is no longer banned, don't use it. There are no excuses.

Look at the bigger picture. If you focus only on the horizon, your eyes get burnt from the sunlight. Look at not just 'oh everyone smokes'.. look at WHY NSAC tests for this, look at why employers test, look at NORML, look at SOMETHING to make your mind grow on the issue, don't just say 'aw i smoke weed woo' because that makes ALL smokers seem dumb.
