First off, its not strictly a sport for "those of you from the south". I live in New England and theres a race track in New Hampshire and there are tons of huge NASCAR fans here as well.
A lot of people watch nascar because of the technical aspect of it. There is an unbelievable amount of engineering and technology behind a race today and a lot of people enjoy that aspect. A lot of people watch it for the thrill of seeing huge wrecks and they like the people that are driving the cars. There are some people that are fans of the sport for the same reasons some people are fans of Pro Wrestling...they just enjoy watching it and find it entertaining.
Personally, I like the technical aspect of the races but I cant stand to watch a race. Im not a big nascar fan at all. I can get all the info about it i need from reading articles and what not about the cars and how they are designed or set up.
Also, there are tons of people who follow the race circuit. They travel the country in motor homes and go to all the races. Its like going to all the football of your favorite pro team and all of them being away games. There are cookouts and all sorts of things going on at the RV area at a race track. Its a lifestyle for some people.

cause watching baseball, football, soccer, tennis, golf, basketball on tv is fun.
i'm not a nascar fan, i love cars and i love racing, but watching them drive around in circles on tv does not excite me. a couple people on this forum have told me to see a race in person and i will enjoy it.
there used to be a 1/4 mile circle track here in san diego and i loved going to the races, but there is no way in hell i could watch it on tv.
just like i love to play football, but there is no way i can watch it on tv.

I love Formula 1 (Danica Patrick yummm) I watch NASCAR, and I seriously have no idea why. I got a little excited at the end when there were four laps to go. There are a lots of aspects I don't understand, for instance how of the pit stops don't completely mess up the order of the race, or the whole team aspect. But they seriously just go around in circles! And there is a caution every 20 laps! Jeff Gordon had a six second lead with something like six laps to go. Then there was a caution, he was almost out of gas, they restart and he had lost the lead, then there was another caution. It's ridiculous! Yet I watch it

That is true....watching some of the road course races is pretty entertaining.
Man, I miss living in Monterey where I could just go on a 10 minute drive to the Laguna Seca Raceway. Those were some awesome races there.

Laguna Seca is NUTS. I love when MotoGP or AMA Superbike goes there each year.

check out this pic i got on honda-tech.com
i know it's not nascar, but i love road racing.
this is frank lin at thunder hill
he did this on purpose, it was the 3 try. he was trying to get all 4 off the ground, but stopped with only 3 off the ground. the first time he did this it was not on purpose, he cut in to early and hit the "curb" and got the back wheels off the ground. so he told his photographer to keep his camera ready cause all 4 were gonna get air.
