Torre turns down offer to return as Yanks' skipper
ESPN.com news services
NEW YORK -- Joe Torre is out as manager of the New York Yankees, rejecting a substantial pay cut after the team failed to make it past the first round of the playoffs for the third straight year.
Torre turned down a $5 million, one-year contract Thursday -- $2.5 million less than he made last season.
Rather than put up with the indignity of a salary slap coupled with a performance-based contract, the man who led the Yankees to playoff appearances in all 12 years he managed walked.
"A difficult day," general manager Brian Cashman said....

I'm a bit surprised actually but I guess it had to come some day.

He's not retiring, he's just not taking the Yankees job. And who can blame him? With the way Steinbrenner publicly disrespected him, and then offered him a 1 year contract? That's almost like saying again, "Win a championship or you're out, and I'll be breathing down your neck all year."
Bobby Cox is only going to manage one more year, and then I bet they'll offer the job to Torre since he's got a history with the Braves organization anyway (pre-Atlanta).

i HATE the yankees... hate them... but always liked and respected torre... all the yankees did is take a step back to the 1980s today... thats it... no way does he take that offer... just did it to save face in town with the fans... although it didnt have that effect as everyone knows it was a joke offer... no way at that point in his career will he take a 1 year offer thats a paycut

With what TOrre was making, I agree with the boss.
I think torre kinda went into auto pilot the last few years and didnt do much managing.
Good luck to him. He won't do well with another team.

There's loyalty only in championships my friend.
We're not just mediocre fans. Nothing short of a championship will suffice.
That's how New Yorker's roll baby. It has to be all or nothin.
