Default Big Nog debut at 73, UFC at MSG in 08

UFCjunkie.com - UFC blog for MMA news, rumors, gossip, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps

UFC newcomer and PRIDE veteran Antonio Rodrigo “Big Nog” Nogueira will make his UFC debut at the ultra-stacked UFC 73 card on July 7. Additionally, New York City will gets its first UFC event — at Madison Square Garden — sometime in 2008.

Those were some of the scoops Dana White provided on the Scott Ferrall Radio Show on Sirius satellite radio last night. MMA writer Pramit Mohapatra recapped the appearance for baltimoresun.com.

Nogueira, who was introduced as a UFC signee earlier this month at UFC 69, had been a rumored fighter on the UFC 73 card before a recent Sherdog.com report stated he would instead debut at either UFC Fight Night 10 on June 12 or at The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale on June 23.

However, according to White, Nogueira will definitely debut at UFC 73, which has quickly become the can’t-miss UFC event of 2007. UFC champion Anderson Silva will meet top contender Nate Marquardt in the main event, UFC lightweight champ Sean Sherk battles Hermes Franca in his first-ever title defense, and The Ultimate Fighter 2 heavyweight winner Rashad Evans faces UFC legend Tito Ortiz. UFCjunkie.com (UFCjunkie.com - UFC blog for MMA news, rumors, gossip, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps) recently broke news of a Jeff Joslin vs. Chris Lytle bout that will also appear on the fight card.

Nogueira, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert, has posted previous wins over Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, Josh Barnett, Dan Henderson, Fabricio Werdum, Heath Herring, Jeremy Horn and many other notables since he began MMA fighting in 1999.

His opponent for UFC 73 isn’t yet known.

The event is expected to take place in Sacramento, Calif. and will air on pay-per-view.

White also stated that the UFC would be heading to New York City for an event at Madison Square Garden, America’s premier sports arena, in 2008.

The Big Apple and its huge population has been a long-time target market for the UFC. The only event ever held in New York was back in 1995 when Buffalo hosted UFC 7.

Considering MMA is currently banned in the state, it would appear that White is confident that he and UFC VP of Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner will have the sport regulated soon.

EDIT: Here is a complete breakdown of the Dana White interview.

This is a huge step for both the UFC and the sport of MMA. With uneducated people out there who still hate on the UFC and consider it just "bar room brawls" this would be a gigantic step in terms of legitimizing the sport.

I am going to pay almost 60 bucks on sataurday to watch Oscar delahoya vs Floyd mayweather jr and its probably going to be a great fight but the undercard bouts I might be lucky if one of them turns out great , and UFC 73 will cost 40 bucks and I get 4 crazy fights LOL I love my boxing but this is why UFC is blowing up the world !!!

I wonder if the ordinary UFC is even going to appreciate the high caliber BJJ, that Big Nog is going to bring into the Octagon.

Well is Big Nog fighting for the UFC or what? His name isn't on the fighter's list. His name is also absent in the UFC 73 fight card. Does anyone have some info as to his status with the UFC?

Probably just as well as when Sapp was on top of him throwing punches.

They should put all of the Pride fighters against Tim Sylvia and see if he changes his "UFC is better than Pride" tune.

Nog fights better off his back, than most people in the mount. He also has an incredible grip.
