UFC and dog fighting
Sportscenter was doing a story this morning about Mike Vick being a pibull fighter(which if you didnt know, i believe is a federal offense). Anyway, they were interviewing a WR from the Chargers who owned two pitbulls himself. They asked him why he thought people were attracted to dog fighting. He replied something like, " People are competitive and like to see fights. Its just like boxing and the UFC." After he said that, ESPN showed multiple clips of KO and TKO from the UFC. I dont think the guy meant it like ESPN made it out to be. I think stuff like this creates a bad image for the UFC.

The whole thing just made the UFC look horrible. First they showed dogs killing each other, and then they showed UFC clips.

There's no comparison between dog fighting and the UFC.
One is sanctioned, one is a felony.
Two men make the free will decision to get in that cage together and usually have the utmost respect for one another. Two dogs are forced to fight each other and have no other choice.

Dogs are abused and tormented into violence, then forced to fight very possibly to the death. No MMA fighter was ever forced to fight, and none have died in the ring/octagon. It's crazy that there are still people trying to portray the fastest growing sport in such a negative light. Give it up already.

Some people are real idiots.
I forget which show I was watching on ESPN last week, and some sports writer was asked which event he was going to watch this past weekend...the Indy 500 or UFC 71. He said something to the effect of "Why would I watch two try and gouge their eyes out. I'm watching the Indy 500."
Most of these morons that speak out against MMA have no clue what actually goes on in a match. They seem comfortable presenting wrong information, and they don't bother to watch MMA to form and educated opinion.
Idiots.

People are so misinformed. I was watching the Braves yesterday, and one announcer made a comment about Jackson knocking out Liddell in under two minutes. The other announcer expressed how crazy it was to pay that much money to watch one fight that lasted 2 minutes. I just wanted to scream there were 9 fights and at least 5 were televised.

Here is the story for anybody that hasn't seen it ESPN.com: Source: Vick a 'heavyweight' in dog fighting
Quote:
The source said he consented to our interview to change people's perceptions about dog fighting because they have "the wrong idea" about it and should see "just one" match for themselves before judging it. "They'll let this other thing go -- what is it called? UFC [Ultimate Fighting Championship]?" he asked. "That is every bit as bad -- you know, that's terrible. But then you have thousands of people that cheer, rah, rah, and they really love that. You see guys get their heads busted, you know, and they get their arms messed up, their legs twisted almost off. But then they fuss over this here, is wrong."

What a complete dumbass.

Just like people have said MMA is with two people who have respect for each other and are most of the time never looking to seriously hurt the other fighter. They go through physicals to make sure they are healthy enough to fight and then the athletic commisions make sure it is a fare fight so Fedor is not fighting Reyes Jr (but I would love to see it)

Yeah, Linville hit the nail on the head. The two are 100% different, and I think that most intelligent people will see that.

I kinda crindged for MMA fans everywhere when they showed it though. And it was a pretty brutal GnP that made it look so much worse.

Dog fighting is grotesque and disgusting. The dogs are severaly abused and do not know any better than to kill or be killed. I'd like to throw the people that run dog fighting into a ring of 50 crazy pitbulls and let them have their way. That includes Micheal Vick if he is found guilty.
It's unfair to compare the UFC to dog fighting. They don't fight to the death or until severe disfigurement. They are adults and choose to fight for the competition and to make money. The fights are sanctioned and are safer than boxing matches.
Boo to Mariotti!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"The gameness that the dog fighters strive for -- and 'gameness' is the willingness to continue fighting, even in the face of extreme pain, even in the face of death -- is something that's bred into the dogs,"
What an ******* this guy is. I really hope the UFC goes after them in litigation. But I doubt it would change anything even if they won a case for slander against ESPN people just seem to want to remain in ignorance.

I can't stand Marriotti. He's too self-serving for my liking. Needs to be more like Woody Page.

I don't doubt for a second he was at or even staged these dogfights, and I also don't doubt for a minute he will get away with it, just like the bottle with weed in it at the airport, that a few weeks later all of a sudden wasn't weed!

I hate the way people assume that because UFC is 'fighting' its only one step away from violently attacking people in the street. UFC is just a sport far less dangerous than race car driving or boat racing. There's no reason to consider it especially scary or immoral.
