Mir out of UFC 74
Five Ounces of Pain
Quote:
It appears that the rumored rematch between former UFC heavyweight champions Tim Sylvia and Frank Mir which had been talked about for UFC 74 on August 25 in Las Vegas is off.
MMAWeekly.com had listed a Sylvia vs. Mir match in its rumors section for the UFC 74 card but recently made an alteration, with Sylvia listed to fight an opponent to be announced at a later date.
According to the Wrestling Observers, the executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Keith Kizer, had no intentions of approving a match between Mir and Sylvia. Mir looked terrible at UFC 65 when he was TKO'd by Brandon Vera after just 1:09 into the round. Apparently Kizer wants to see Mir's next fight be against an opponent that isn't the caliber of Sylvia, so that he can prove himself again.
Mir apparently is still in good standing with Zuffa though, as he'll be the color commentator for tonight's debut of the WEC on the Versus network.
As for Sylvia, I'm not 100 percent sure he'll he ready for UFC 74. Recent reports indicate that he has indeed undergone back surgery. I do not know the extent of the damage to his back or the nature of the surgery, but whether he'll have enough time to rehab from the surgery and then get himself in fighting shape before August 25 is a huge question mark.

That sucks, but i think big tim would have squashed him if he came out like he did against vera, they should put him on a UFN or something with some kind of a can before a fight vs silvia.

Bummer.... but I hope the UFC has a sparkle in their eye and signs Sylvia v. Crocop. Otherwise I"m sure they'll just give timmy a can.

That would be a great fight. Not something I'd bet on though unless the odds were just ridiculous.

Krav, you NEVER put your money where your mouth is...... so don't pretend like you will this time :P
This is really really dissapointing, because the ONLY fight i wanted to see either of these two in was with each other, and a grudge match like that would be epicly dramatic, too bad, that was a big notch off the hype for 74.

Unless something drastic happens as far as his training and dedication it may be time for Mir to hang up the gloves. He has looked absolutely awful since the motorcycle accident.
I'd love to see Vera v. Sylvia or Sylvia v. CroCop. I don't like Sylvia's shot in either of those matchups.

Im personally not to impressed with tim lately.
Randy totally outschooled him.
I agree with randy's comments totally, Tim does just enough to win a fight and that is it.
Randy for sure exposed that.

Yeah this would be an amazing fight. A good fight right before the main event, but not the main event.

Yeah I think Vera has gotten screwed by not getting enough fights or a title shot. He is a high caliber fighter and I think he can beat Tim and eventually take the title. I don't really like his attitude though.

Vera was named as the next title shot vs Sylvia, and chose to walk away from his chance. Now he has to earn his way back again, through a much stronger field. He blew it big time.

Props to NSAC indeed.
I was starting to wonder if they'd shoot any of the UFC's plans down, ever.
Even though they didn't approve of Hunt-Butterbean for PRIDE(???).
Seeing Sylvia KO Mir was something I was not interested in seeing anyway.

When I first read that Mir was out of 74 my first thought was that he slipped a disk carrying all of those buckets of KFC up the steps to his apartment. J/K
Mir is just a total shadow of his old self. I'd much rather see Tim fight Mirko. Not that it would be a great fight or anything. Just better than fighting Mir.

I hope this gets to Frank and he begins to take MMA seriously again or decide to hang up the gloves (which would be very unfortunate if he does), I think Frank has concerns now than getting into the cage to fight. We all want the old Frank back, but Frank is still only a shell of his former self for whatever reason.

Even the "old Frank Mir" would get nowhere near a title shot now in the UFC.
The only big win he has is over Sylvia. And I think even back then Sylvia would have beaten Mir 7 times out of 10.
He just got caught that time.
Who were his other wins? Tank, Traven, Pete Williams, Wes Sims?
And then of course the loss to Ian Freeman.
I think the old Frank Mir is one of the most overrated fighters around.

i am thinking the samething. what is this old Frank Mir everyone is talking about? Mir has never had good cardio, never been a formidable striker and he never really fought top notch competition. there really is'nt much differance between today's Frank Mir and the pre-accident Mir. in fact its scary how much the same they are when the level of talent in the HW division has gone through the roof. old Mir, new Mir is all the same.
