Default Fedor would get a title shot

With a win in his Octagon debut at UFC 76 in September, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will earn the opportunity to challenge for the light heavyweight championship, according to recent statements from UFC President Dana White on SportsIllustrated.com.

    Here’s the snip:

“White says that if Shogun wins in September, he will get the next title shot at the UFC Light Heavyweight Title. That could lead to a rematch with [Quinton “Rampage”] Jackson, who Shogun obliterated in Japan.”

Obliterated might be an understatement — the beating that Shogun dished out in 2005 en route to the middleweight grand prix title was downright criminal.

Of course, Rampage is now the current 205-pound champion after he defeated Chuck Liddell at UFC 71 in May. He is set to make his first title defense against PRIDE FC middleweight and welterweight champion Dan Henderson at UFC 75 in London, England, on September 8.

In the same article, White mentions that he is “very interested” in PRIDE FC Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko and is “working on getting a deal done.”

Part of that deal, it appears, may be an instant title shot against either current champion Randy Couture or Gabriel Gonzaga — the two are set to clash at UFC 74 in August.

    Here’s another snip:

“Part of the difficulty for him is Fedor’s management team. White says that he has ‘no idea what these crazy Russians are going to do.’ White will give Fedor an immediate title shot if and when he is brought in.”

If and when? That sounds imminent.

Clearly, the signing of Fedor would be a boon for the UFC and its fans. However, some might be uneasy about a fighter coming in from another organization and leapfrogging Octagon veterans who have been working their way up the ladder.

But that goes to show how talented Fedor and Shogun are — these two are arguably the top fighters in their divisions in the sport today.

Looks like if they sign Fedor then he would get an instant title shot, can't say that he doesn't deserve it though.

i kinda of disagree with the leapfrogging also, at least shogun has to win one before reaching a title bout.

im generally disheartened with the way the UFC is managing their title bouts and things as a whole in all divisions except middleweight

I kind of agree, I think that he should at least have one fight in the UFC first, before he gets a title shot, so that the people who aren't really into MMA, and think that the UFC is the only thing that exists, would get to see how good he really is. However, if that is the only way they can get him to the UFC then I say offer him a title shot.

Yup. Get him in the UFC any way possible. If he's as good as we think he is, he'll run through the champ and prove he was worthy. I have no problem giving the undisputed #1 "pound for pound" fighter in the world an instant title shot.

"no idea what these crazy Russians are going to do."

What the hell is Dana thinking? His comments are stinking more every day. Whatever. Now, Fedor has to have a direct shot at the title. Man, no one can argue that. You know why? Because we all know he is the best and any contender fights are a waste of time.

Anderson Silva got a title shot after beating Chris Leben for ****'s sake! And people are not complaining anymore about it. Why? Because he has proved the UFC right by dominating the division. Fedor is Anderson Silva x 100.

I would like to see Fedor in the UFC either way but i would rather see him fight a contender first like AA,big tim,or even a rematch with Big Nog before he fights for the title.......bottom line lets just get him here first

Yeah, but the fact is that he will not come without an immediate title shot. So, the "let's just get him here first" implies give him Gonzaga or Couture for the championship. That is probably what Dana was referring to with the unfortunate Russians comment.

    I don't.

Fedor's the top rated heavyweight at the world, and the top p4p fighter in the world, there's no one in the world who would deserve an immediate title shot more than him.

Fedor Emelianenko is the exception to the rule. I mean, this guy is the top of the food chain. He's THAT GUY that everybody wants. IMO, he's the complete and total package.

    Fedor "The Total Package" Emelianenko

    I like that.

I cannot think of anybody else that I would allow instant title shot status, if I were Dana "F-Bomb" White. Well, on second thought, there is one other guy that fits the bill: Dan "The Man" Henderson. But, DW seems to have dropped the ball on that one already.

It only makes sense that you give PRIDE title holders instant title shots if they are coming to the UFC to stay.

It makes no sense to sign a PRIDE title holder to the UFC, strip him of his PRIDE title and tell him to face a contender. That kind of disrespect will not get a contract signed.

like some people have been saying, with top fighters in the world give them a fight or two to get used to it. however this isn't just a top fighter, he is hands down the single best mma fighter in the world. its like saying michael jordan in his prime would have to sit the bench the first start of the season if he went and played in spain. he's the best in the world and quite possibly the best ever. fedors the best hands down like 6:30. i've been wanting to say that for a while lol

I wonder who Shogun is going to pummel?

Yeah, clearly Fedor deserves an immediate title shot if the UFC signs him. There is no one in the world better, hell nobody else is even close.

I wonder if they will make Fedor relinquish his Pride belt for a shot at the title.

I doubt it. It would the perfect chance at a belt unification between the orgs.
