dude you are talking like this is nothing, its a human life someone who has a family. please think outside of the mma world this effects a lot more than a sport we love to watch.
I don't mean it like that, I mean IF there is a death (which there will be eventually) it would be worse for the sport it happened now than if it happened a few years from now. Of course it will be horrible if/when it happens, even if it has no effect on the sport it will still be a huge tragedy.

Well its true that it will happen eventually in MMA, maybe not the UFC first even. I just think eventually someone will catch a hard shot to the throat, get slammed wrong on their neck and die. Boxing has had its fair share of deaths though also, MMA has had one and it the fight was against doctors orders under no sanctioning body.

Thanks for all the responses.

I think that if there were to be an accidental death in The Octogon there would be a lot of flack in the press. I don't think it would be banned out right but I think a few big sponsors and mainstream broadcasters could be scared off for a while. However if the person who accidently killed someone by (for example) snapping their neck in a slam were to be found to be using steroids or some other illegal performance enhancing drug the situation would be much worse. I would think that they could be charged with murder or manslaughter at the very least. This situation I could see be 'almost' terminal for The UFC if not for MMA in general.

A minor league baseball coach was struck in the head by a linedrive the other day and has since died from his injuries. No way in hell baseball is going to be banned either.

At this point in MMA a death would definitely ruin the sport. 10 or 20 years from now it wouldn't hurt MMA at all.

I dont think it will at all. Look at boxing, whos main goal is to hurt your oponent more than he hurts you. More people die in boxing every year but yet it's continues to be considered a "sweet science" and a pure sport. There could be a person a month die in boxing and banning boxing would never be debated or hinted at. I think that the same will happen to MMA.

My take on the situation is such, the government has no business banning sports that it "feels" are dangerous. people die in all sorts of sports, not just combat sports. Look at auto racing, people die there and NASCAR is'nt going anywhere. the same can go for Drag Racing and the NHRA, they recently had a death and are looking for ways to make the sport safer. in the meantime the government has'nt stepped in and said to stop. also take into account the stance the govenment has on cigarettes, they're not banned and yet they kill more people each year than probably compete in MMA all together. same with alcohol. the thought of banning MMA or boxing or any sport is ridiculous when you look at the bigger picture.

I wouldnt think so because of the fact that the events are all sanctioned now. THe purpose of sanctioning is to ensure there are rules in place that minimize real life threatening or debilitating injury.

If anything, the particular athletci commission would be suspect and how they determined the rules for MMA.

i havnt seen someone die in the ring in boxing but iv heard of people dieing during boxing related injuries i.e. to many hits to the head. with MMa of course the longer you fght the more chance you have of death or parkinson (alziehemers) but MMA offers the "potential" for fighters to die instantly.
