I read all the threads that were produced after the fight, but apparently I , unlike yourself, have the ability to recognize when someone is exaggerating the facts.
His cardio, although still suspect, did show improvement in the Pulver fight.
If you say it didn't, then you're just hating.

Right, it lasted that long, which wasn't long enough to conclude anything about his cardio.
|
Round 1
4:47-Thirteen seconds into the round, BJ Penn gets the takedown.
3:47-BJ Penn gets a second takedown.
3:10-BJ Penn mounts Jens Pulver
2:56-BJ Penn executes an armbar, Pulver escapes
2:45-BJ Penn executes a triangle choke
2:05- Jens Pulver escapes the triangle choke, Jens is in BJ’s guard
0:54- BJ stands up
The fighters exchange punches for the rest of the round.
Round 2
4:44-BJ Penn gets the takedown
3:35-BJ Penn mounts Jen Pulver
3:00-BJ Penn takes Pulver’s back
2:53-BJ is back in the mount position
2:38-BJ takes Pulver’s back again
1:54-BJ secures a rear-naked choke
1:49-Jens Pulver taps
BJ had three takedowns, three mounts, took his Jen's back twice, and he attempted 3 submissions with the last submission ending the fight. All of this happened in roughly 8 minutes, and not once were the fighters stood-up due to inactivity on the ground.
I would conclude that BJ's cardio has improved since his last fight.
Do you still believe he showed no improvement in cardio for the Pulver fight or can you still not tell?

The camera flashed on Jens once the fight ended. He was obviously breathing heavy. Who could blame him? He just got done with a hard fight. I am sure that was what Mat Hughes was referring to.
|
I wouldn't be surprised if Matt was looking for a sign of weakness in BJ. Too bad it came after the fight was already over.
And I rewatched the fight. BJ showed signs of being engaged intense activity, but to conclude his cardio showed no improvement in this particular fight is just hating.

No, simply put some people breathe heavy all the time when exerting themsevles and do not get winded. I was a person like that when I was in great shape. I would always breathe hard when in competition but could still run like a demon. So I will give BJ the benefit of the doubt on that one.
|
Ok.

If you can sit and map out a fight minute by minute you have way too much time on your hands. And no I have not seen evidence of his cardio improving yet. Jens Pulver is no where close to a Matt Hughes in strength or size. You can't compare the two can you? In your first comment you said to me--- Who said he had good cardio.. and i quoted one person then another person just agreed a few posts up that he was saying BJ had better cardio in his last fight....... Then you turnaround and argue the point that he has better cardio which you asked me who said in the first place. You are too confusing. If you are going to try make a valid argument about something, quit switching sides and trying to play devil's advocate.
If you are going to make the argument (which I thought you weren't making originally) that BJ's cardio has improved, I guess one might conclude that since he lasted a couple of minutes longer than the Hughes fight against a smaller, weaker opponent. I guess we will have to agree to disagree until he goes into the fourth of fifth rounds with a quality opponent. Again, I am not disagreeing with your nuthugging, I am just simply stating that the Pulver fight wasn't enough proof.

No, I don't hate Penn. If anything, I gained some respect for him recently. He at least, acknowledges that he has had poor cardio in the past. I respect him for telling the truth.

I'll try and decipher what you just said.
You said:
Quote:

I don't really see how any of you guys could say you saw a huge improvement in cardio..
|
And there was only one person (Kaledonia) who said that BJ had a huge improvement in cardio.
You make it seem as if more people said they saw a huge improvement in his cardio.
Why don't you try using paragraphs, less run-ons, multiple periods and dashes.

Don't give me that argument.
I could turn around and say that BJ exerted himself more in the Hughes fights, because BJ was a smaller, weaker opponent and thus he gassed more quickly.
You should give Jens Pulver a bit more credit than that.
Quote:

So you don't consider Jens Pulver to be a quality opponent...ok.

I'm not nuthugging, I'm just helping out the clueless.
I'm arguing that BJ's cardio showed improved from his last fight. Not that he will have awesome cardio for every fight from here on out.
But you refuse to give BJ credit where credit is due. You've shown your true colors.
Who said you did hate BJ penn?
Quote:

If anything, I gained some respect for him recently.

As opposed to losing even more respect for him, right?
He at least, acknowledges that he has had poor cardio in the past.[/quote]
So he ackowledges he's had poor cardio in the past, hires a nutritionist, comes in leaner, shows better conditioning and completely dominates the guy that beat him before. Yet you refuse to admit BJ showed ANY improvement in conditioning.
You're either blind, biased, or clueless.

I doubt it took him weeks upon weeks to map out that fight.
Good cardio and better cardio are two completely different things. I think we can all agree that BJ's cardio was bad. In his last fight I think he showed that he had better cardio than before. I think you can justifiably state that Penns cardio is better. However, before I say it is good, I want to wait until he goes deeper into the fight.

First of all, I write informally when posting on a forum. I could do an editing clinic on your posts, and I am fully capable of doing it. I wouldn't go there if I were you.

My true colors? So I have colors now just because I disagree with you? Yes, it's my dark conspiracy to bring down BJ Penn.

Someone else stepped up to the plate and admitted that they thought BJ had better cardio because..... Go find it yourself since you have nothing better to do with your time.

It's spelled "switching" but I am not going to waste time explaining that again if you didn't get it the first time.

Um.. You are the person who said I was hating. Try remembering your own posts before you start quoting what everyone else says.

It obvious that even when presented with facts, you're not going to accept the truth so you've resorted to just insulting me.
You've got nothing for me, sweetie.
I've done my job.

That is the reason that he will now compete over in the WEC where there is a 145 pound weight class and a title that he can compete for at his natural weight.
It's weird, I am among those few that really does not like Penn, but I'm among those that feel that Penn has finally gotten onboard with better conditioning. I think that we will see a different Penn from now on than what we saw in the last two or three years.

Completely Agree. He is amazing, and I hate it.

Penn would beat Sherk if they fought and Kos will beat GSP. so i disagree with Hughes on both accounts. also i think Hughes is going to lose to Matt Serra. i think Serra matchs up well with Hughes and is going to surprise alot of people with his ground skills.

i agree with the KOS saying because i think GSP is more well rounded but with BJ, i think he will just be a better opponent than Sherk not putting down on Sherk

Guys, quit acting like this is grammar school and quit being so nit-picky over simple stuff.. things like this are bringing the mood of the boards down. This is an informal notice right now.
