Yeah I just saw this at UFCmania a couple minutes ago. Hope he doesn't need surgery, or they can scrap that rematch in December.
Matt Hamill: Fights Bisping with torn ACL that might require surgery (Video) at UFC blog for UFC news, results, videos, rumors, fights, pics and tickets
Wow even more respect for Hamill in my book.

Considering that's the same injury that floored Tito for a year and a half to where his title became "vacant"
Absolutely. Hamill is a beast
"I don't fight @ 170 anymore because I was Emanciated all the time" - Jayson "Mayhem Miller" (On why he won't drop to 170 to fight Nick Diaz)
i was wondering why hammil's td's looked so bad and why bispings td defence suddenly was way better than usual......
hammil is out for 6-10 months from what i read guys
well if its 6 - 10 scratch the rematch is right
- Shogun
- Rampage
- Bones
- Anderson Silva
- Nick Diaz
- Marcus Davis
- Cro Cop
Yup, speaking from personal experience as I have torn my ACL and had that surgery. He could possibly be out for the next year and unfortuately it is very likely that he my not ever be the same. Sometimes you can come back as strong and possibly better but usually not and it is extremely hard to do.

Shogun ends the debate![]()

some of these stories are blown out of proportion... well most are... fighting with broken arms, torn acls... all are true, but so mild where its painful but not unbearable... these are injuries that when said, imply that they are left helpless... yet they still fight at that pace?? i guess they are all true, i just get sick of hearing "remarkable" stories like this... great fight by hamil though
He went into the fight with the torn acl? Didn't he go into one of the fights on TUF with a broken arm? cuz if thats true then next time i go into a fight with a serious injury and if some one asks if im alright im ganna say yea ive only pullen a hamill.
He does need surgery and will be going under the knife this week...He should be ready to fight sometime in early '08.
He went into the fight with it? Fair play if he fought with that, I will be interested how he continues to progress after the injury because he has already come on a lot.

If you tear your ACL, Is that not a major injury that would require surgery? And not might require surgery? And if you tear your ACL, could you actually continue to fight? And does'nt this kind of injury require months and months of phsio. after surgery? And would'nt recovery time be more like 12 plus months? Too many questions, too many variables....maybe it's a conspiracy by Darth Dana and his minions, at the evil UFC empire, to keep his poster boy around a bit longer.![]()
Wow, that makes Hamills performance quite amazing...

Everything you said is true but you can fight w/ the injury if you keep the fight standing and go strait foward. Side to side movement or planting could cause the knee to give out and rolling around on the ground or grappling could further damage the knee (tear cartilage maybe). I know someone posted Hamil would undergo surgery soon and be ready to fight in early 08'; I believe that is way too soon but we will see.
hammil is a warrior, but he should have pulled out.
he go's into fights with torn acl's and broken arm's....and each time he does it pisses all over his skill
Okay, here's some info.
If he has a torn ACL, he will have to get the reconstructive surgery if he wants to continue in MMA. Simply no choice. The ACL does not heal itself without surgery.
You can fight but it severely limits you in all the ways that FightFan76 outlined. Its simply not something you can continue doing longterm. One fight, and its bearable. Its not a matter of pain with an ACL tear, it's more a matter of severely limiting your mobility. An example would be when Jorge Gurgel fought on TUF 2 with an ACL tear. Tito, Ken Shamrock, and a few others have completed fights with ACL tears, getting them repaired afterwards.
For Hamill, he probably figured this might be that one chance at main card exposure and figured it was worth it.
As far as rehab, 6-9 months is more than realistic. And with today's rehab techniques and alot of hard work, I don't believe the notion that you can never be the same after ACL reconstruction. I've personally been in charge of close to 50 ACL rehab protocols of athletes and other than two young ladies whose work ethic was lacking and they had little desire to get back to their sport, every athlete has returned stronger than ever. Absolute full recovery is 12 months (full quad recovery), but he could easily be fighting with little issues in 6-9 months, putting him back in action in March-April of next year. The dozen+ wrestlers (great work ethics) I've worked with were back on the mats in 5 months and competing in 7. No reason to think Matt won't be in that area as well barring some unforeseen complication like an infection, tendon calcification, or patellar fracture.
I hope that Hamill comes back fully healed. He is a great fighter to go through with it the way that he did against Bisping. But, in a way, and I mean no disrespect, I am glad that this will kill the rematch. I really do not care to see them rematch this fight so soon. Maybe two years from now it will have something to offer. I hope that Hamill comes back 100% after surgery and healing and rehab.

Wow. This makes me even more excited to see a rematch, because this means that Matt Hamill will destroy Bisping next time.
Note: When I first saw this match, I was okay with the decisions because I thought it could easily go either way (and I really like both fighters). After watching the fight again, I gave 1st round to Hamill, second to Bisping (barely) then third to Hamill.
Knowing that Hamill performed that well with such a significant injury, and with the disadvantage of fighting in front of Bisping's home crowd... wow... Fairly certain that Bisping will get dominated next time around.
