Frank Mir’s Camp: Cheick Kongo Deserves Mir Fight
Not long after the Mir vs Nog Rumor
http://mmajunkie.com/2007/09/19/fran...ves-mir-fight/
Quote:
Yesterday TAGG Radio reported that one-time UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir (10-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) will likely face Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (30-4-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in his next fight. However, according to Mir’s own camp, up-and-coming heavyweight Cheick Kongo (11-3-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) may also be a possibility.
After learning of the rumored Mir-Nogueira fight, MMAjunkie.com (UFC news, MMA news, UFC rumors, UFC gossip, fighter interviews and event previews and recaps - MMAjunkie.com (formerly UFCjunkie.com)) contacted Mir’s business manager, Dean Albrecht, late last night.
Albrecht is one of the sport’s friendliest and most professional managers, but much to the chagrin of nosy MMA writers, he doesn’t leak fight bookings until the UFC officially announces them. When asked if the Nogueira-Mir bout was official, Albrecht assured us it wasn’t.
“No official announcement,” he wrote to us. “We are hoping for Kongo first. He called out Mir. I think he deserves it.“
While Nogueira was quickly deemed a huge test for Mir, Kongo has emerged as a legit threat himself. After posting a stunning upset of Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic earlier this month at UFC 75 (while showing a much-improved ground game), the Frenchman has emerged as a top-10 heavyweight in many fighter rankings.
Kongo’s lone blemish on his UFC record is a close, split-decision loss to Carmelo Marrero at UFC 64. His victories have come against Gilbert Aldana, Christian Wellisch, Assuerio Silva and Filipovic.

I think this is a much better match-up for Mir and would be a more entertaining bout. I wasn't too keen on the 15 minutes of BJJ stalemate we'd probably witness with a Nog vs. Mir fight but Kongo vs. Mir is the classic style vs. style match-up. I like Mir's chances in that one should it happen.

This would be a much better match up for Mir and I think this fight makes more sense right now. Mir needs to work his way back up the rankings, plus Nog should be getting a real #1 contenders fight or a title shot. Please let us have AA vs Nog in Nov or Dec.

LOL, UFC please don't give this fight to Mir.
Mir doesn't deserve it.
He only wants to fight him, because Kongo has poor ground skills and he just beat Mirko.

Besides, I'm also sure that he's afraid of Big Nog!

I would be scared as well if I were Mir. His bread and butter is the ground game and Nog will tool him on the ground or standing imo.

This makes me lose a little bit of respect for Mir because it's clear he rather fight Kongo then Nog because Kongo would be an easier fight for him. Rather then try to push himself up the ladder against the top tier fighters he wants to fight the less skilled fighters below him for an easy win. Not saying that Kongo would be a total cake walk, he is a good fighter - but he's no Nog.

Well if he fights Kongo, he's gonna have to get him on the ground first, which means getting past his knees and fists. I can see why Mir's camp would rather fight Kongo, but I believe that in reality Cheick will be just as difficult an opponent for Mir as Big Nog.

True, Mir would have to watch for Kongo's hands and knees while trying to take him down, but once Kongo is down Mir would dominate. On the other hand, if Mir stands with Nog, he'll get mauled by Nog's boxing, and if it goes to the ground, Mir doesn't have his BJJ to fall back on. Also, Nog has an iron chin, and I don't see Mir ending the fight, or getting the decision.

Can't blame the guy, lol. I mean, he's been wanting that belt back for the longest. Mir's conditioning needs to be top notch for either of those fighters. I honestly think that Kongo would give Mir a serious run for his money. Taking Kongo to the ground is great for Mir, but if he's gassed from trying to do so it would cancel itself out.
Nog, with his training with the Cuban boxing team would pick Mir apart... and the fight would pretty much stay on the feet, IMO. Either way, it's a tough fight for Mir.

Mir doesn't deserve a fight with Kongo. Mir needs to win another fight convincingly before he gets a top HW.
And, I don't see any reason Mir couldn't hang with Nog on the ground. Mir's BJJ is, obviously not as good as Nog's, but it's no joke either.

I'm not convinced that the "Old Mir" would even rank amongst the top 5 in the division let alone the "New Mir". He hasn't shown us much yet. Kongo would be perfect IMO.
