As far as I know no one has ever been permanetly injured or killed in a sanctioned MMA competition, so i think that doctor was talking just to hear himself speak and it would be pretty tough for that to happen with the rules they have in the MMA competitions. I bet he's never watched a fight in his life!!

i also don't know of any MMA fights where someone has died. the whole quote was much longer. the doctor claimed that MMA was safer than boxing because there is less emphasis on punches to the head. he then went on to say something along the lines of the UFC thinking too highly of its medical precautions to prevent serious injury. i suppose you can'y really expect a big publication like Time to give MMA a favorable endorsement. thats not what they do anyway. as far as the chance of someone dying? its certainly there, eventually it will happen. Tra Telligman vs. Tim Sylvia had everyone worried when Tim KO's Tra convincingly with that kick.

Yeah it's not out of the realm of possibility that it could happen, but It would have to be some punch or kick to the head with a lot of force plus someone hitting their head on the mat. I haven't seen the Slyvia vs Tellingman match yet.

It's a sick KO man. How many people die in boxing each year? Given the differences between MMA and Boxing I think the death rate would have to be extrememly less in MMA with the decreased amounts of hits to the end. Also, when it goes to the ground, forearm strikes and such don't have nearly as much force as a standing punch.

the big differance between boxing and MMA is the gloves. in boxing you can get hit with 100's of hits to the head that are not direct hits but still rattle your brain. tne you do get knocked down and they give you the chance to get up as many as 3 times in a round. in MMA, you get knocked down and thats it 99% of the time. there is no standing 8 count or 10 count. also its been shown that the damage done by the small MMA gloves are mostly skeletal or surface related. cuts and maybe fractures or the eye sockets or jaw. in boxing its your brain that gets beat to a pulp.

And I remember Joe Rogan saying once then when you get knocked out then get back up and get knocked out again like 3 minutes later is where Brain Damage can occur.

to get back on topic, to see the UFC get time in er, Time was not surprising. i have been seeing MMA fighters in just about every magazine related to health and fitness that is on the news stand. the part that stood out the most to me was that Dana White is only a minor player in Zuffa so it looks like he is'nt totally to blame for what is going on.

Me too. People are starting to recognize it as a sport like boxing. It’s kinda nice to see. I still remember when I would talk about the UFC and the only way I could explain it to someone was to say cage fighting.

nothing is worse than the BBCs article on MMA, they reviewed a really really low budget 'strongman' show and called it MMA and the reporter held up WWE CAGEFIGHTS when talking about how it was a brutal sport not fit for the modern world. Now THAT man was a douchebag.

I agree. The BBC are full of crap anyway (I'm presuming you're talking about the British Broadcasting Corporation)

What really gets me is they ridicule MMA, and yet the programmes they come up with are laughable in the extreme - I'm finding it hard to describe their stuff without swearing - endless DIY improvement programmes, antiques this, soap opera that. The BBC are stuck so far up their own ***** they could never appreciate MMA.

But to get back on topic, it's good to see UFC getting recognition in magazines like Time, as long as it's not dissing it totally. I'll pick it up this month and check it out.

Oh, I get BBC America and aside from the rare showing of Father Ted and Black Adder its ALL DIY shows.. or 'lets sell junk in the attic so we can have money to do what the diy shows teach'



Time is a much better place for MMA to be, even if the reviews arent totally grand
