Default UFC Requests SuperBowl Weekend Date in Las Vegas

Quote:
Zuffa LLC, the UFC’s parent company, has officially reserved a Feb. 2 fight date for a SuperBowl weekend card in Las Vegas, MMAjunkie.com (UFC news, MMA news, UFC rumors, UFC gossip, fighter interviews and event previews and recaps - MMAjunkie.com (formerly UFCjunkie.com)) has learned.

UFC officials have requested the date with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the local regulatory body. The event is expected to take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Over the weekend, a source close to the venue told MMAjunkie.com that the UFC has already begun prep work for the event. The organization traditionally holds major pay-per-view events the same week as the National Football League’s SuperBowl show. It’ll be the UFC’s fourth consecutive year in which the February tradition has been held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

While the Feb. 2 date has been requested, the NSAC has yet to approve it, states the commission’s website. However, based on the organization’s history, the UFC’s request is unlikely to be turned down.

As MMAjunkie.com has reported over the past month, UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture will likely headline the event. The 44-year-old champion last defended his title against Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 74 in August, but he suffered a broken ulna bone (the smaller of the two forearm bones) while checking a kick in the first round and doesn’t expect to fight again until 2008.

The Mandalay Bay Events Center holds approximately 12,000 spectators, and the UFC could move the event to the larger MGM Grand Arena (capacity: 17,000) if the organization expects larger-than-usual ticket sales, said our source. However, the last time the UFC held an event at the MGM (UFC 71 in May), fewer than 15,000 tickets were sold. The same thing happened at UFC 66 in December 2006, when fewer than 14,000 tickets were sold.
Stupid move IMO. The UFC is growing, but not half of what football is. I know it will be Saturday not Sunday, but people won't want to have a big party on both days. Of course I will, but I bet it won't do as well as if it were on the next Saturday.

Stupid move? What are you talking about? The Liddell-Couture 3 Super Bowl weekend show was one of their highest selling ever.

If Randy does defend the title at this event, wouldn't it be too soon to have him face the Kongo/Nog winner?? The winner of that fight would have like a month in between fights. Does that mean Randy/Fedor or Randy/Arlovski??

I would throw a huge party and probably take off monday if I could. I hope they do this event, the popularity of mma grows at a faster rate every year.
Can't wait, it'll be the weekend from heaven

The only way it would have been better is if the UFC was able to show a free PPV on FOX or NBC.

It should sell well so long as it is a good card......MMA fans are knowledgable and wont pay for a crap card.

I would love to see a series of cards where the number 2-9 contenders match off in a tourny to see who gets the no. 1 slot to fight for the title..

I think TICL means is that everyone in Vegas will be in church on Sat. so they really won't be up to party. I know when I went to Vegas for 4 days, I sat in my hotel room twiddling my thumbs for 3 of those days.
