Gonzaga vs. Werdum at UFC 80
Quote:
Gonzaga vs. Werdum at UFC 80
Revenge for Jungle Fight in January
October 29th, 2007

The Carioca Gabriel “Napao” GOnzaga finally shall have a chance to avenge his knockout loss to Fabricio Werdum in Jungle Fight 1, in September, 2003. Marco Alvan, leader of Team Link confirmed today exclusively to GRACIEMAG.com that the battle between the black belts will take place in January, at UFC 80, in Newcastle, England.
Napao is recovering from a fractured nose, suffered during his loss to Randy Couture, in August. Werdum, though, has been training hard with his new team, Chute Boxe, since his loss to the Belarusian Andrei Arlovski in April.
“They fought at different times, Napao was 10kg lighter and was not originally on the card. The fight was offered to him at the last moment and they said there was a change in adversary and it would be Werdum. The two have progressed a lot and have what it takes to put on a great fight. Napao thinks the first fight was good and that this one will be even better. He accepted the proposal the minute it was offered,” declared Alvan.

It was a 3rd round TKO. I think Gabe will take this one fairly easily, I still think he is going to be a force in the HW division barring his nose getting smashed mid fight

Looks like a good fight but its so bad that Arlovski gets screwed for beating this guy and then this guy goes on to get a big matchup like this.

While there'll be some people who are gonna disagree with you on the "beating" part..
I totally agree with you that it's unfair that Werdum is the one getting the shot at GG!!

This should be a good fight!
I predict a round 2 TKO win for Gonzaga.

I think this is odd. Werdum loses to AA and gets to fight the former #1 heavyweight contender in Gonzaga while AA is nowhere to be seen. Thats just like when Jardine lost and got to fight Chuck while Houston Alexander got to fight .... who...?
I think there should be a bit more structure as to who people fight and when. I absolutely DONT think it should be anywhere near what boxing has in place but a bit more structure to it wouldnt hurt at all.
That all being said, I think this will be a great fight and judging from Werdum's previous fight, I dont see him winning.

Although people can disagree and say Jardine beat Chuck.. I agree with you.. I say Jardine wasn't supposed to get that fight at the first place.. Houston Alexander deserved it more..
Same case here.. Werdum may have a chance for the win (although I don't see it).. But Arlovski is the one who supposed to get the shot at GG!!

I think you may indeed see AA on UFC 80, or 81. Look for him to take on Mirko Cro Cop. Might be the lesser of 2 evils for AA.

I'd rather see Arlovski vs Gonzago too, but this should be an interesting match. Gonzaga was doing very well in the first fight until he gassed. I don't see that happening again, and with GG's new confidence in his striking, I'm definitely picking him to get revenge.

Yeah it's kind of weird. But let's be honest, the main reason Jardine got that Chuck fight is because they expected him to lose. That's probably why Werdum is getting this fight, so Gabe can get a payback victory and stay near title contention. Gabe has the potential to be a major player in the HW division for a while.

Werdum is a very accomplished fighter outside of the UFC. People need to start expanding their horizons. GG will be happy to get such a reputable opponent.
The fight will be great and I predict Werdum walking away with a win.

Tough to call but this is not an easy fight for Werdum.
A bigger guy who have very good BJJ is what he is up against.
I belive GG will win this one unless he gass. The match up remind me to much of Cro Cop Vs Kongo where Cro Cop is being in Werdum`s situation unable to use his striking skill a lot due to size.

Ya, I know that he's done well outside the UFC but he lost his last match and hes getting to take on one of the top fighters in the devision. He doesnt deserve that fight in my opinion. AA or Kongo does.

Interesting match up! Like most, I see this fight being different from their first fight. GG seems to have improved a hell of a lot since then.

Yea, just like GG never decerved a title shot in the first place.
I neve looked at him as a nr. one contender anyway. AA meeting Kongo would be actually mean a lot more and should be a fight wich could leed to a title shot.
