Default MMA Madness Q&A: One-on-one with ref "Big" John McCarthy

"Big" John McCarthy is one of the most familiar faces in MMA. But, he's not a fighter – he's a referee and if it's a big fight, odds are McCarthy is the man officiating the action. MMA Madness' Ben Zeidler caught up with McCarthy by phone late last week.

MMA Madness: You probably have the coolest job in the world. How did you get involved with refereeing for MMA events?

McCarthy: [Laughs] I started because I worked out with Rorian and Royce Gracie before the UFC was ever started. When they did the first one, there were some things that happened that Rorian wasn't happy with, and he asked me to do it.

MMA Madness: Is it true that you were involved in fighting but decided not to pursue that career because you didn't want to fight your friend, Royce Gracie?

McCarthy: Well, they didn't want to put me in there with him. I never had the chance to, which ended up being a good thing. Things worked out better for me the way they went.

MMA Madness: How did you come up with your trademarked phrase, "Let's Get It On!"?

MMA Madness: Out of all of the fights that you have officiated, what fight stands out in your mind as your favorite?

McCarthy: It's impossible for me to say. I've done so many fights! [Laughs] But asking what my ultimate favorite fight is could mean what fight recently, or what was the biggest fight as far as coverage and anticipation. But I did the Tyson Griffin-Clay Guida fight in Ireland. I love that fight. I thought it was a phenomenal fight between two great guys. They did everything in that fight that is part of mixed martial arts. I love that fight.
Indeed that was a great fight! BJM is cool as hell IMO.

I am sorry. You can't use the phrase "so pretentious" without paying a royalty to U2. They trademarked that phrase back in the early 80's.

Very good points about the UFC Octagon Cage and Pride Roped Rings.

He's absolutely correct. You can't just jump into a cage and think there isn't a difference in cutting off angles, etc.

BJM is awesome. It'll be a great and well-deserved day when they induct him into the UFC Hall of Fame.

BJM is cool. I have to agree so much when it comes to his commentar about steroids. This is the reason why I was sure Sherk was guilty after watching all access.
