Filho Will Not Train Chuck
Quote:
The JJ and Judo blackbelt, Paulo Filho will travel December 8th to USA to make his first title defence against Chael Sonnen, at WEC 21, which will happen in Dec. 12th. In an exclusive interview for TATAME, Filho told us his preparation for the fight, and about his invitation to train Chuck Liddell for his fight with Wanderlei Silva. "I would never train an American to fight against a Brazilian. I am not a slut, or a prostitute" said the WEC champion.

That's ironic, since someone's gonna "**** Chuck" whether he trains him or not, and it's going to be a Brazilian either way

What a stupid attitude. He is well versed in Judo and JJ which are both rooted in Japan. What if Mitsuyo Maeda had decided that because Gastao Gracie was Scottish or lived in Brazil he wouldn't teach him? It is doubtful that Paulo Filho would have the combat knowledge he has now.
But I agree this isn't a big deal I don't see Liddell gaining much that he can use in his style from a Judo player. Liddell doesn't really use the clinch much which is where Judo is stongest.

You have to remember that for a lot of these guys, English is not their first language, so the true connotation gets lost in translation. For example: Babalu when he said he taught David Heath "a lesson". I seriously doubt he meant he taught him a lesson by holding the choke on longer, but that's the way it was perceived and he had to suffer for it. I'm sure what Filho really meant is that he simply wants to stay true to his fellow countryman. Nothing wrong with a little patriotism.

I agree with what was said earlier. I guess everyone that trained him or helps train him were from brazil. Its a good thing not all people are like him our he would not have a mma career.

I am still trying to figure out the "I am not a slut, or a prostitute" comment. I guess I just do not see training other people as a form of prostitution. And, it seems to me that most master level martial artists look to train a lot of people. So, I guess all trainers and coaches in MMA are "sluts" or whatever. That must have been a bad translation. The comment as is in English just seems stupid.

i guess youre right about the translation, but i am led to believe that what he means is somewhat to that effect, maybe without the explicit terms

Time for a USA USA chant!!
Seriously, I have no problem with him not wanting to train against a Brazilian. But it's too bad he views that as cheating on his country (or whatever he meant) since he does fight in America and get paid by Americans.

Not really, he doesn't want to do something for money that goes against his beliefs, that sounds right.

What is wrong with nationalism? I get people that try to flame me on here b/c I love America. I also love the fact that he loves his country and countrymen. I think it is patriotic and more people should be like him.

Strange, for me it seems harder to missunderstand this then to understand it.
It is like the Fedor tread.
All he say is he dont want to train against the Brasillian fighters and that all the money in the world could not make him change his mind.
Him using the word slot is just a formality. Nada to make a big fuzz about.

If I did not like Dan Henderson, and Wanderlei Silva asked me to train him, then I think I would. I wouldn't think of it as helping an American lose, but as me helping someone I don't like lose. It's almost like saying you wouldn't help another race win, or your same race lose.
