UFC 80 looks totally awesome / sarcasm
This will be the first PPV I don't purchase in quite a while. I'm not gonna pay 40 or 45 dollars for one moderatly intriguing match (Penn/Stevenson). Joe Silva did awesome with the matchups on 79, but 80 looks to be a stinker.
Styles make fights though so who knows....
Event: UFC 80: “Rapid Fire”

Location: The Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle, England
Main Event:
BJ Penn (11-4-1) vs. Joe Stevenson (28-7) for the interim UFC Lightweight Championship
Main card (televised):
Hvywt.: Gabriel Gonzaga (8-2) vs. Fabricio Werdum (9-3-1)
170 lbs.: Marcus Davis (13-3) vs. Jess Liaudin (12-8)

This is really a lackluster card. I don't think Joe Stevenson should have got a title fight in the first place, and all of the other fights do not have a major effect on any of their divisions. Even if the fights are exciting they don't mean anything. I don't want to come off as arrogant but I'm not dropping 40$ on a mediocre card.

I'll be at my usual sports bar for this one too. There have been several awesome fights that nobody paid attention to on paper. And as far as the impact on the division? I watch for the fights, impact doesn't matter to me at all.

no kidding. If you don't want to buy the ppv don't bitch about it. Go to a sports bar and watch it. Spend the money you would have on the ppv on wings and beer.

I'm not an AA fan but I know that many are. If he were fighting GG instead of Werdum the UFC would have made more $$$$$$$$$$$.

The only fight that interests me on this card is Penn/Stevenson and I'm not going to pay over 40 bucks for one fight.

I was pretty let down over this card as well. Looks to be about as exciting as the first few fights of UFC 79. I'll catch it some other time.

79 is a tough act to follow, but I don't think 80 is as bad as 72 or 78... In fact, I don't dislike any of the fighters on the main card. In fact, I'm pretty stoked about seeing Penn, Stevenson, Werdum, Gonzaga, Lambert, Rivera and Davis all on the same card. No, the results of each of those fights (save the main event) will not likely have an immediate impact on the near future of any of those fighters (except maybe Gonzaga or Davis, who I hope gets a bigger fight if he wins) but I think they have the potential to be pretty good fights all around.

Most time, if the card is a lackluster, they throw on some exciting prelims. Key words Most time.

I will buy this card. I will not pre-judge it.
It seems like many people want only the BIG names on every PPV.
You cannot have that. The UFC needs to showcase ALL of the fighters.
Not just the ones that are the most popular.
Penn, Stevenson, GG, Werdum, Davis, Grove, Rivera...
Those are enough to satisfy me.
I am a fan of MMA, not just a few pop starts.

I'll probably go to a bar to watch this fight but it wouldn't trouble me to buy this card. BJ is always a treat and I think the GG/Werdum and Lambert/Gouveia have the potential to be good. Not to mention having Marcus Davis and Kendall Grove on the card as well.

That post completely related to the topic / sarcasm.
Yes I agree this is a pretty boring card, BUT usually the UFC Fight Night is excellent. Look at the names on those. They are not big.
Stevenson/Penn = War
GG/Werdum = Sub/KO
Gouivia/Lambert = The fight that is most intriguing to me. The LHW is a very deep division. The ones who wins this should definately be in the picture. Lambert showed heart and heavy hands against Babalu. Wilson has some of the nastiest kicks i've seen in the LHW division. It should be good.
Davis/Liaudin = An exciting fight. Every fight Davis is in is exciting.
Grove/Rivera = Total domination by Grove. He is coming off a loss and should be hungry as hell.

This is how you get the big names, you get a fight like Gonzaga vs Crocop which albeit was exciting for seeing Crocop for the first time, but out of it we got a surprise winner who went on for a pretty big fight against Couture.
These fights can bring up surprise winners, big performances and future stars, thats why they are important. But I think they should have a BIG fight on every card, I know like with 79, there was 2 MASSIVE fights which you anticipate, and it may dull the impact of a big card but maybe they could have split that into 2 events, I wouldnt have found 79 as exciting but instead you would have had 2 decent events.
Or do we preffer the huge events with 2 or more big fights ala 79 (GSPvHughes & ChuckvWandy) and 76 (ChuckvJardine & ForestvShogun)?
I think thats somethign we have to decide, there isnt enough fighters to have 2 awesome fights every PPV.
