Default Arlovski vs O'Brien at UFC 82

Arlovski's back
Look for Chicago's Andrei Arlovski to return to the Octagon on March 1 in Columbus, Ohio. The intensely popular Arlovski has been in limbo because of contract negotiations since defeating Werdum on April 21, 2007. This will be the last fight of his UFC contract.

Andrei Arlovski’s Management: Reported UFC 82 Fight Date not Confirmed
Posted by MMA Junkie on January 18, 2008 at 1:23 pm ET

Andrei Arlovski at HDNet FightsA report that former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski (11-5 MMA, 9-4 UFC) will return to the Octagon at March’s UFC 82 event appears to be a little premature.

The Chicago Sun-Times today reported that Arlovski will return to the octagon for a March 1 fight at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. However, representatives from Arlovski’s management today told MMAjunkie.com (UFC News & Rumors - MMA News - UFC Fighters - UFC Event Recaps and Previews - MMAjunkie.com) that Arlovski hasn’t yet signed to fight at any event.

With that said, though, Arlovski has just one fight remaining on his current deal, and he’s expected to fight before the contract expires on April 15. With the recent cancellation/rescheduling of a March 8 event in the U.K., that makes UFC 82 the most likely option for Arlovski’s return.

Still, though, nothing has been signed, his management team said.

UFC 81 currently features a main event between UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and former PRIDE champ Dan Henderson.

The 28-year-old Arlovski hasn’t competed since April 2007’s UFC 70 event, where he scored a unanimoius-decision victory over UFC newcomer Fabricio Werdum. Prior to the fight, UFC President Dana White hinted that the winner might be in line for a title shot. Arlovski posted a clear-cut unanimous-decision win at the overseas event, but it didn’t exactly sit well with fans expecting fireworks from the two heavyweights. And, of course, the title shot never came.

Arlovski hasn’t fought since then — a layoff of nearly nine months.

The UFC has wanted Arlovski to sign a contract extension, but the fact that he hasn’t won’t keep White from booking him for a fight. During a press conference last month, White said that Arlovski would likely fight in the next “couple months” regardless of his contract status.

Still not confirmed but it seems likely.

Its also rumored that Jake O'Brien could be he opponent...Not exactly the huge matchup we were waiting for, but good to see AA fighting again.

Hopefully he fights Vera. That would be an epic fight. I bet they will give him a can though.

That's the guy that beat Herring right? Whatever happened to him?

I'd like to see AA fight the winner of Sylvia/Nogeria; unless Randy ends up fighting them.

IF it does happen I won't be overly excited. AA should be fighting someone above O'Brien.

i think it will be a good fight. i dont think aa necessarily deserves a higher ranked opponent. i think he should have to beat o'brien and then someone like kongo or gonzaga or cro cop before he gets a title shot

I agree, but it doesnt make sense for Zuffa to give him someone highly ranked for his last fight, as he might not re-sign if he wins.

Seeing as through O'Brien like the shoot a lot, we might get to see Arlovski's Sambo back in the octagon.

I hope the same. He has all the tools to become a contender and maybe win the belt again some day. I'm happy that they let him fight again because he deserves at least that.

If he doesn't re-sign after this fight I hope he goes to M-1 and fights Fedor. Dana would be pissed.
