Diego Sanchez to fight at UFC 82
just looked on MMAWEEKLY and found that Diego Sanchez will be fighting Roan "Juncao" Carneiro at UFC 82. At UFC 79 Juncao pretty much dominated Tony Souza. I met him too, he was a really cool guy. AND I took pictures. Anyway, I think that Sanchez will take this one...

- DIEGO SANCHEZ TO FACE ROAN CARNEIRO AT UFC 82
Saturday, January 19, 2008 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Diego Sanchez will return to action on March 1 in Columbus, Ohio and will face new American Top Team member Roan Carneiro, as Sanchez himself announced via his MySpace page on Friday.
Sanchez is coming off of back to back losses to Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch, the first losses of his career, and he hopes to get back on track in the fight with Carneiro.
The Ultimate Fighter season one winner also recently talked about his new team of trainers which will consist of Rob Garcia, who will handle his stand-up and strength and conditioning, along with Saulo and Xande Ribeiro, who will work with Diego on his ground game.
Carneiro currently sports a 2-1 record inside the Octagon with his lone loss also coming at the hands of Jon Fitch, but recently the fighter migrated to the American Top Team academy in Florida where he will train alongside one of the best MMA camps in the world.
The fight could be a ground clinic as both competitors are known for their tremendous jiu-jitsu games, and while no official announcement has been made by the UFC regarding this fight it is believed this match-up will go on the main card for the pay-per-view featuring a headline title fight between champion Anderson Silva and Dan Henderson.
This will be the second trip to Columbus for the UFC, the first of which being UFC 68 which is still one of the largest live audiences the promotion has ever had for an event.

Remember when he was undefeated and people were talking about him becoming the next champ?
Truth is, he's young and talented but I still think he needs a win...and a decisive one would help. Five out of his last six fights were decisions.

I give this to Carneiro. I don't know he is just really impressive. He did a lot more damage to Fitch than Sanzhez did also. I say Carneiro by sub or dec.

Carneiro is a very strong grappler. I could see him possibly winning this fight too.
I was really impressed at how effortless he made it seem when took Fitch down in their bout. Taking Fitch down is a really tough thing to do, and to be able to it almost effortlessly is awful impressive.
If he can keep Diego on his back, and avoid getting submitted, he could very well win this fight.

Comparing skills vs skills, how do you think Diego can win?

i seriously think stoppage, diego is not gonna get caught in a sub and i think diego takes roan down and brings heat until the stoppage
thats my honest, not-devaluing-a-particular fighter opinion i dont think diego is done, is a has been, nor is he outclassed in WW
i look forward to this its gonna be a great fight, roan can very well win and i wont be surprised...im just feelin diego will take it and it begins with explosion and takedowns followed by unmerciful GnP

I can see that side of things.
BTW, I don't Diego is done by any means. I think he's one of the top WWs in the world. But historically, Diego has had a tough time in fights where he can't take a guy down.
I really feel Diego will have a tough time taking Roan Carneiro down. Roan really proved how strong he can be in a fight by looking at his takedowns of Fitch.
Also, if i'm not mistaken, Roan fought Anderson @185 pounds. The guy is a HUGE 170 pounder and it's all muscle. Diego wanted to drop to 155 after the Fitch fight, because he didn't feel he was as strong as the bigger 170ers.
So IMO, I would give the edge to Carneiro because I feel he has the skills to neutralize Diego's strengths, and take home a victory.
Whether or not it will happen that way, only time will tell. But I'm picking Carneiro as my upset pick for 82.

I don't know much about Roan Carneiro, but according to what I have read, this fight might be a good one.

LOL I think of that every time I learn he is gonna fight!! I was almost sold and convinced when he would say he was destined to be the champ and undefeated. His confidence was very high and almost beleivable.
If he loses to Junco, he may be writing a resume to elitexc or wec.

Great fight. You know they will both bring it. I predict 2nd to 3rd tko win for Deigo. It could go either way really.

GREAT CARD!
UFC 82 with Hendo-Silva, Koschek, Snachez, Fitch. I'll get this one for sure.

Excellent fight, Ive been keen to see Roan get some high profile fights since I saw him at an event here in the UK back in 2006.
These 2 are pretty evenly matched imo, but like Pitbull says, Roan will be a lot bigger than Diego which could make it harder for Diego to take him down.
Id give a slight edge to Roan, but I wouldnt be surprised whoever wins.

This should be an exciting fight. Both fighters have a great ground game. I'm going to give the edge to Diego though. He has more experience fighting inside the octagon. Also, going by both of their fights with Fitch, Diego was able to take the fight all the way to the end and lost a split-decision where as Roan got submitted by Fitch in the second round. Plus, Diego has lost two fights in a row which is going to make him super-determined to win this fight. Anything can happen, but I'm leaning towards Diego.

Diego needs to come into this fight heavy, like he did in his early fights when he first entered the UFC at 170lbs.. he can't afford to be light just because he does'nt want to cut weight. His strength, literally, lies with being a physically strong grappler. One that can overpower or at least match that of his opponent. He should also forget his outing against Joe Riggs, that KO victory was probably one of the worst things that ever happened to him.
