Matt Hughes vs BJ Penn
Anyone have the video of Matt Hughes Losing to BJ Penn back at UFC 46? I was just looking at Matt's record and wasn't aware of his loss to Penn. I've only been watching UFC since about UFC 49 and was always under the impression that Matt has won just about every fight he's been in. I had heard that he's lost to Dennis Hallman twice, but didn't know about Penn.

Yeah, I downloaded a month or two ago on Shareaza, and Hughes was completely dominated to be honest. It really wasn't that good of an effort. I don't have the video anymore though.
If the two guys had a rematch, I sure wouldn't be betting against Matt Hughes.

Hughes got owned. I never thought that would be possible before watching it.
I'd bet against Hughes if they faught again. Hughes was in his prime back then (i'm sure he's still in his prime now, with more experience). But I doubt he could beat BJ Penn.

Hughes has been owned on more than one occasion outside of the fight with BJ. It is hard to look at him in and what he has accomplished in the UFC and think that would be possible. I think he would have a chance to beat BJ now. BJ hasn't looked as amazing as he did back when he was a LW and when he beat Matt.

I think Hughes beating BJ would be more on BJ losing his conditioning than Hughes getting better. I think Matt Hughes is awesome as a fighter, one of my fav's. But he was just completely overwhelmed in every aspect. BJ Penn was the better fighter that night.

Definitely. I think Matt may have been overconfident as well, but one thing that does factor in that loss is I think he got a big lesson in humility and it seems like he has not made that mistake again. This is also not to take anything away from BJ but it was just completely one sided. I think BJ still could have had a chance to win but wasn't expecting it in the fashion he did. BJ is one of my favorites as well and he just hasn't impressed me lately. Some people think he is overrated but I think he just isn't completely in the game like he used to be anymore.

No,Matt did't slip, you are wrong. Penn was just the better fighter that night. He ground and pound Hughes for a while and then submitted him. No slip, groin hit or anything like that.

It would be awesome if someone could post that fight. I'd apprecaite it.
As for Penn, I've only seen him fight once and I can't even remember who he faught. But at the time I wasn't overly impressed and when I read on sherdog that he beat Hughes I was like, "Whoah!" It's only been a year and a half since he beat him so thats what really suprised me.
Looks like Penn has mostly been doing K-1 lately. Does he still have a UFC contract?

he lost his contract and was stripped of the belt right after he beat matt for fighting in a different org. i dont think he and dana get along, imagine that dana white runs off another world class fighter.....

I'd be pissed too if my champion went and freaking fought in a different leauge like K-1. Wouldn't you?
Besides, I call fluke. Matt has seemed to improve where Penn has seriously slipped. Did you see him vs Renzo? He couldn't even take out a 40 year old retiree with a 3 year layoff.

It wasn't luck. It was a matter of Matt Hughes not taking BJ as serious as he should have. Matt got lucky not to get chocked out by Trigg the last time they faught.
I still watch that DVD all the time just to see Matts face after BJ gives him the big old kiss. I love it. Matt's cheeks get all red, and he has this expression like "GEEEEEE GOSH."
I think it would be a damn good rematch, and I think Hughes would win in a rematch. I know he won't take it lightly this time.

Nick I noticed you mentioned that Matt was "lucky" not to get choked out by Trigg. I don't think luck had anything to do with it! Trigg literally knocked Matt out against the fence, he dropped came to and still ended up beating him. Matt is a true warrior. Yes BJ Penn did get the better of him once. But that was one match I am positive that if they met again Matt would make sure he won.

Just watched the UFC 46 match Tuesday Night and BJ owned him from the start. also he should have lost to Newton who had him choked out only to be dropped (not slammed) on his head.

Did you watch the fight? Trigg should have choked out Hughes. He should have controlled Hughes better, seemed like he thought it was only a matter fo time, seemed to loosen up a bit and Hughes was able to turn into the choke. Yeah I think he was lucky, and that doesn't take anything away from him. He got hit in the balls, lost his bearings, and got caught in a choke that should have ended the fight, Trigg I guess messed up more than Hughes getting lucky. Yes he pulled it out like a champion, but don't think hughes is some kinda of unbeatable god, he gets lucky too. And he has been put to sleep before, and still got lucky enough to knock out the guy when he fell after passing out. I love Matt Hughes, but he has holes in his game just like everyone else. And remember that Hughes and Penns weights are much closer now a days than they were when they faught. Hughes out weights everyone in the welterweight division, so I wouldn't be so positive about a victory since BJ would most likey be a solid 185 if there were to be a rematch.
But yes I too think Matt would avenge his loss against BJ. Don't take the word luck so serious, I wasn't saying Hughes was lucky to beat Trigg, I was saying Hughes was close to being put to sleep, Trigg seemed to lossen up. If I remember correctly Matt fell backwards with the RNC applied and trigg was leaning against the fence, but Trigg didn't sink the hooks in, which would have prevented Matt from turning into the choke. If Trigg would have done a better job at getting the hooks in, he would be Champ (thank god he is not), so thats why I say Matt got lucky. I guess Lucky that Trigg didn't do a good job with RNC.

I disagree. Hughes did nothing in that fight. It wasn't like Matt was coming out and beating on BJ and some little mistake caused him to lose. He was clearly dominated in that fight. BJ beat him. There should be no controversy about it. I think it may be because you didn't like what you saw. Unfortunately for Matt that was not the case. I think he was just not ready for the fight and that is why he got a beatdown.

Not slammed? That drop was not enough to knock the guy out, Matt had to have put some force into it for it to knock him out. He was nearly out and it was a last attempt to get out of the hold, and it worked, just not how it was probably planned to.
