Default UFC 83: Serra vs. St. Pierre 2

I don't know if I missed something or if I'm just really lucky that I got to see the update on the UFC site before anyone else, but here's 95% of the full card announced

UFC® : Ultimate Fighting Championship®

All I see if the ticket info thread, so this might just be the second time I've ever gotten to post real news before anyone else :O (the first was when I relayed the announcement of the UFC's new glove, made by Century )

Honestly, I really don't know who they're gonna put in front of Cote, since all of the obvious choices are already taken. I guess maybe Belcher or Kampmann, or is Kampmann already booked and/or not recovered yet?

There is only one problem with the Serra and St. Pierre fight now. Say GSP wins, everyone will say, "Serra's back problems". I like Serra and would like to see him defend his title. But if he loses...there will be that thought, "did his back problem take away from his mental or physical game".

Guess I'm just disappointed that this couldn't be a clean fight with nothing to think about before the fight. I like the fight card though.

That's a valid point, but I was thinking there'd be less talk about how/why Serra lost, and more of people saying "I KNEW GSP was going to win, it was so obvious" - yeah, just like it was obvious the first time, and how they all "knew" the outcome before their first fight. I was rooting for GSP in that fight, but I was nervous and on the edge of my seat that whole time...

I am sorry but I am not going to buy any excuses; he is a professional fighter and if it is that bad then he just needs to opt out.....

I don't think people will say that. GSP is expected to win the rematch and should win in impressive fashion. Even if Serra comes in at 100%, GSP is going to get his title back.

I think they are both great fighters. But in the past, there have been times when fighters goes through injuries and it's talked about after the fight after they lose or win. Frank Mir is one example.
Travis Lutter has had the most success so far against Anderson Silva. Lutter lost, but at first he was doing the damage. Once the fight ended, the forums came out with, "Silva had surgery on his knee 11 weeks ago" as if to blame the surgery as the reason Lutter did the way he did in the fight. Again, I know he lost, but at the beginning of the fight he was on top doing the damage.
Injuries are talked about a lot in the fight game and how it plays the role it does. But my main point isn't to add or take away from either fighter. But the fact that I would rather see Serra lose (if he does lose) with no excuses or people making excuses for him.

Here's the entire line-up confirmed in an article on UFC.com...

Georges St. Pierre vs Matt Serra
Rich Franklin vs Travis Lutter
Michael Bisping vs Charles McCarthy
Kalib Starnes vs Nate Quarry
Mac Danzig vs Mark Bocek
Jason Macdonald vs Joe Doerkson
Sam Stout vs Rich Clementi
Ed Herman vs Demian Maia
Jonathan Goulet vs Kuniyoshi Hironaka
Patrick Cote vs TBA

This looks like a very good card from top to bottom, I'm looking forward to seeing Patrick Cote fight again, Ed Herman is usually exciting as well. Sam Stout vs Rich Clementi is a stand-out fight for me because if Clementi wins this fight I think he'll solidify himself as a threat in the division, Stout is really good and an exciting fighter but Clementi's been one of my favorite's since TUF so I really hope he wins. Mac Danzig vs Mark Bocek should be interesting since I thought Danzig was going to be fed some easy guy but Bocek has a win in the UFC over Doug Evans, so he should at least be solid. Kalib Starnes vs Nate Quarry will likely be fight of the night but Quarry is going to win.

Michael Bisping vs Charles McCarthy, nobody believes me but watch "Chainsaw" is going to beat Bisping, for some reason I just can't see Bisping winning this fight, even though I've never been too impressed with McCarthy something tells me he's going to win. Travis Lutter vs Rich Franklin should be a good fight, it won't really have an effect on the middleweight division which sucks because they both lost to the champion, but it should still be a good fight.

Georges St. Pierre vs Matt Serra 2, Serra absolutely owned Pierre in the first fight, it doesn't matter if you have family issues before a fight you go into the octagon to fight and everybody says Pierre lost because of family issues, I think Serra proved himself to be a top-tier welterweight in that fight, everything in this fight seems to be in Serra's favour he's hungry to finally fight again, GSP might be nervous fighting in front of a hometown crowd and GSP's gameplan recently has been to put people on their back, that's right where Serra wants to be so he can work submissions, I see Serra winning the fight.

I really wish they went with a total USA vs Canada 2 type gimmick for this show. What a great idea that was.

Default Gsp

Do you think that serra can even stand a chance with GSP, now that his fully determined to win the belt back, i mean look at what he did to hughes and thats hard to do especially against hughes.

Ya I agree. I think Pierre will come with an awesome gameplan. I predict a round 2 stoppage by whatever he wants.

you cant count out serra. hes got amazing grappling skills. hes won bjj tournaments and at the adcc submission wrestling tournament, probably the most prestigious grappling tournament in the world, he defeated takanori gomi and jean-jacques machado.

and in his mma career his only losses are to a lucky spinning backfist by shonie carter, in a fight in which he was winning, and decision losses to great fighters in bj penn, karo parisyan and din thomas.

i still think that gsp will win this fight, i just dont think that matt serra is the lucky chump some people make him out to be

Everything seems to be in Serra's favor? Are you kidding? First of all, Serra is coming off of a major back injury, who knows how that will effect him in this fight. Secondly, the fight is taking place in GSP's hometown which will be a very hostile environment for Serra. I don't know how you can think GSP will be nervous fighting in his own hometown. GSP/Hughes II took place in GSP's hometown and GSP didn't seem that nervous when he TKO'ed Matt Hughes to win the fight and the WW title. Thirdly, don't you think GSP is eager to avenge his loss to Serra and reclaim the undisputed WW title? I like Matt Serra, but unless he gets lucky again there is no way he's going to win this fight.

Yeah Serra never had a chance against GSP, remember their first fight? Serra got uber pwnd by the awesome GSP, what was I thinking GSP is lyk undefeated, Serra better get lucky or it might go just like last time.

Of coarse Serra has a chance, just not a good one. I think even Serra knows he got lucky in that first fight. But that's besides the point. You said everything leading up to this fight is in Serra's favor, I was simply pointing out how that is just not true.

This is going to be a great fight. Say what you will about flukes, about GSP being the best WW ever, about Serra being underestimated all those years--when the bell rings, the most confident of us all will be doubtful. Nobody has any idea who is going to win this fight, and all we can do is assume like last time that GSP will dominate.

My prediction: GSP by Spinning Backfist.
