Default Frankie Edgar talks about fighting Gray Maynard

I'm not dismissing Gray's chances but I'll go with the MMA experience and level of competition here. Winning against Fisher, Bocek and Griffin isn't very easy. I think "The Answer" stays undefeated.

Quote:
Frankie “The Answer” Edgar (8-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) is anticipating another exciting fight in his upcoming match-up with fellow young, undefeated fighter Gray Maynard (4-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC). And while both fighters are well-versed wrestlers, Edgar expects the fight to be just as much of a stand-up battle as a ground war.

The pair will square off on the undercard of the upcoming UFC Fight Night 13. The event takes place April 2 at the Broomfield Center in Broomfield, Colo.

Edgar discussed the fight on Thursday’s edition of TAGG Radio (www.taggradio.com), a content partner of MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

“I actually see this fight going everywhere,” Edgar said. “With both of our wrestling abilities, it could hit the ground real quick, or it could stay standing. I’m just expecting to have a fight that ends up in every position.“

Edgar is certainly no stranger to back-and-forth battles in the octagon, having previously earned Fight of the Night honors in a decision victory over then-undefeated Tyson Griffin at UFC 67. But like Griffin mentioned before his most-recent fight, Edgar is more interested in finishing the fight than earning any bonus.

“You want to look spectacular when you fight — head and shoulders above the guy you’re fighting,” Edgar said. “The best way to do that is by finishing him. A Fight of the Night (bonus) gives you a payday, which is nice of course, but you just want to be able to finish your opponent.“

While Maynard’s wrestling has been the strength of his UFC fights so far, Edgar feels that’s not all he needs to prepare for.

“I know he’s heavy-handed,” Edgar said. “He may not be the most technical striker, but I know he’s got heavy hands. I know I’m going to have to keep him moving.“

And although the fight will not be featured on the televised portion of the talent-laden card, Edgar is undeterred.

“That’s just the way it is,” Edgar said. “I just need to fight and make more of a name for myself, I guess.“

So would another win put Griffin in the title picture?

“I don’t know,” Edgar said. “You never know what they’re thinking. All I know is that I’ve got to win to be in contention. So that’s what I’m worrying about — just winning this next fight.“

This really ticks me off. Edgar should be fighting a contender next.

The UFC always pulls this crap. They have Lauzon vs Florian and now Maynard vs. Edgar. Why not Lauzon vs Maynard and Florian vs Edgar?

i think edgar is an amazing fighter and should defnitely be in title contention. he appeared to be pretty cool in that interview as well. i say edgar finishes this fight as long as he can avoid getting caught with a big shot early on

to be fair joe lauzon is 16-3, 3-0 in the UFC and finished every single one of those fights

whereas frank edgar is 8-0, 3-0 in the UFC, but only having finished 4 of those fights and 1 in the UFC

so even though i would rate frank edgar above joe lauzon because i think he has more talent and potential, sheerly on recorded performances i can see why the UFC has given the more experienced lauzon the higher ranked match up

It's not about number of fights, it's about quality of wins. Edgar should be in line for a title shot after beating Griffin, Bocek and Fisher. That beats Lauzon's record of Pulver and two UFC noobs. Edgar deserves a contenter, not Maynard.
