Yeah, that's what it was about. There was all kinds of speculation about what martial art was the best. No one thought it would be a grappling art. The strikers had all the glory. No one was interested in bjj. I remember Severn being announced as a wrestler. I laughed out loud. A wrestler, what's he going to do, hold his opponent down? Ooh, scary.

It's difficult to explain, but it allows you greater control over your opponent, making it more difficult for him to elbow escape or "upa" (bridge and roll) out from under the mount. It naturally forces your hips down low, which is where you want them to keep your center of gravity heavy and low. Here's a video demo'ing the grapevine position, with a toe hold added on.
Excellent, thanks! I have learned something new today!

Ye those old shool events are pretty funny to watch again. For me the UFC has evolved perfectly with me. When i saw my first UFC (UFC 2) event i was pretty young and i was all about the bloodsport and nothing about the technical aspect of the game, loved the big guys knocking eachother out... But as you grow up, becomes alittle wiser you start to appreciate the sport and the competition more and more.
back then i wouldnt wanna change a thing about the UFC and today i wouldnt wanna change a thing about the UFC... well somethings i would like to change

Yeah, you aren't kidding! And Royce would look so angry after each bout.

If anyone's interested in the early UFCs Id recommend reading "No Holds Barred" by Clyde Gentry. It tells the story of how the UFC started, all the early events, losing their PPV deal etc etc etc It had lots of cool stories in it.

i agree but UFC has evolved and turned MMA into a sport in its own right. I just would like to evry know and then see an old school experienced kick boxer against a karate guy or judo against BJJ, just because although in UFC today there are still fighters that favour striking over grappling and vice versa it would be good to see style against style rather than fighter against fighter. Just as exhibition bouts.
