Default Patrick Cote out - Jason Day in for UFC 83

I was really looking forward to seeing Cote fight again...I bet the Canadians were too.

Quote:
A sprained knee has forced Patrick Cote off Montreal’s UFC 83 card, and Canadian Jason Day (15-5 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC to fight Alan Belcher (12-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC), according to a report from The Fight Network.

According to the report, Cote suffered a sprained knee after falling on some ice and will be unable to train for four to six weeks. Day, who’s been on the UFC’s radar for the better part of the past year, recently defeated former UFC fighter David Loiseau with a split decision at a Hardcore Fighting Championships event earlier this month. It was his four-straight victory — and apparently enough to earn a UFC contract.

UFC 83 takes place at Montreal’s Bell Centre. The event, which created the quickest sellout in UFC history, features a main event of UFC welterweight champ Matt Serra vs. interim champ Georges St. Pierre.

Last week Belcher told MMAjunkie.com (UFC News & Rumors - MMA News - UFC Fighters - UFC Event Recaps and Previews - MMAjunkie.com) that he had accepted the fight with Cote, though Cote’s manager told TFN that he wouldn’t have accepted the fight anyway.

Day has fought for some of North America’s top regional promotions and owns victories over the likes of Loiseau, Jonathan Goulet and Ron Faircloth. Of his 15 career victories, seven have come via knockout and seven via submission.

Belcher was supposed to fight Ricardo Almeida earlier this month at UFC 81 but had to pull out of the fight with bronchitis. A former light heavyweight, he began his UFC career with a 1-2 record. However, he’s since posted back-to-back victories over Sean Salmon and Kalib Starnes. His UFC 77 fight with Starnes appeared to be “Fight of the Night” material, but the bout was stopped a couple minutes into the second round because of a deep gash on Starnes’ forehead. Belcher was credited with the TKO victory.

I've heard of Day but don't think I've seen him fight. In looking him up, I see he's Canadian and Cote TKO'd him last year.

Rumor has it Cote never intended on taking this fight, as it was never official. He thinks fighter Belcher is a step down and he and his management want a top 5 middleweight.

Hmm thats kinda disrespectful imo. I can understand Cote wanting to fight the top ranked MWs, but to say Belcher is a step down seems a bit off. Its not like Cote's beaten anyone in the top 10.

I see where you are coming from but I dont know if I would call it disrepectful even though I believe this would have been a decent fight w/ Cote coming away w/ a KO victory at some point. I actually respect Cote for wanting a tougher fight though; alot of guys constantly get fed cans to hype them up and atleast Cote is having none of that. Having said that I would not call Belcher a can as far as competition but he is as far as noteriety which is important too.....

Too bad, I was looking forwards to seeing Cote on this card. Hopefully he gets that top 5 fight soon. He deserves it.

Yup Cote can lose four straight fights then win three against non-top 10 Middleweight fighter's and get top five Middleweights, that makes a lot of sense to me.

I would have much rather saw Cote fight Belcher because I thought that was going to be a really close fight, and probably a good standup war. Day doesn't look like a bad replacement, but I'm going with Belcher by TKO.

Damnit! The Cote fight was 1/3 of the reason why I said 83 was better than 82 in that other thread!!!

Damn I wanted to see Cote fight again. He has been looking really crisp in his last couple fights and I think he climb his way up if he keeps it up.

I don't think Cote is ready for any of them.

The prob with MW is that there's one fighter way up top, and then after that it's a large clump of very good fighters all around the same level, I think he should try someone like Macdonald, Horn, or a rematch with someone he previously lost to before heading up to a real top 5 fight.

Macdonald was put up against Franklin because it was really one of the few options
