Fitch - next up...title shot
Good for Fitch. The Wilson match was a tune-up for the big one.
Dayton Daily News MMA: Jon Fitch’s Record Streak Nets Title Shot -- MMAjunkie.com
Quote:
Anderson Silva’s remarkable victory over Dan Henderson at UFC 82 overshadowed a smaller — but still significant — storyline from the event: Jon Fitch’s record win streak and upcoming title shot.
The story was the focus of this week’s “MMA Insider” column for the Dayton Daily News.
With Saturday’s unanimous-decision win over tough UFC newcomer Chris Wilson, Fitch (16-2 MMA, 8-0 UFC) posted his eighth-straight victory in the UFC. No one has matched that streak since UFC hall-of-famer Royce Gracie won eight straight fights from UFC 1 to UFC 3.
Fitch seemed genuinely embarrassed to be mentioned in the same breath as Gracie when news of the record came up, but the Inadiana-based fighter was confident that his body of work deserved a title shot. After all, the list of victims is pretty impressive: Brock Larson (22-2), Josh Burkman (9-5), Thiago Alves (13-3), Kuniyoshi Hironaka (11-4), Luigi Fioravanti (12-3), Roan Carneiro (12-6), Diego Sanchez (18-2) and Wilson (13-4).
In the post-UFC 82 press conference, UFC President Dana White confirmed that Fitch would be next in line for a title shot once “this whole Matt Serra and Georges St. Pierre thing gets figured out.” Those two fighters headline an April 19 event in Canada.
White also hinted that Fitch had the opportunity to sit out the early part of 2008 to wait for his title shot. Instead, he lauded the 30-year-old fighter for taking the fight with Wilson.
In any manner, to read the entire story, which includes some info about Mark Coleman’s upcoming fight with Brock Lesnar and UFC 82 live gate/attendance info, head over to Dayton Daily News.

Hey, it's Karo's own fault for not wanting to fight Fitch. I'm glad Fitch is getting it, he deserves it more for simply having the I'll fight anyone attitude rather then Karo's give me the easiest opponents attitude.

While I wasn't at all impressed with Fitch's performance over Wilson, I do think he's earned his title shot. That being said, he's no match for GSP imo.

He might not be a '300' character like people on these boards insist fighters be, but he has waited YEARS for a shot and has fought much tougher people than Fitch. I don't mind the guy saying look I have a shot upcoming that injurys/shedualing issues/TV shows have postponed over the years, I want my shot with the least amount of risk. It is MMA anything can happen, he should get his shot.

If GSP gets past Serra, I think Fitch will be an interesting fight for him.
With all the talk about GSP's striking, he's still primarily a GnP-fighter.
Fitch hinted at this at the post event presser, and I bet he'll go into this fight looking to use his wrestling defensively and try to catch GSP.
I also agree big time with what Serra said about GSP:

Fitch and Karo both deserve title shots. To say one deserves it more than the other is tough. I really wish we could have seen them fight, but ehhh.

Come on, how funny would it be if he did the same thing to GSP?

I don't see why Fitch has as much haters as he does, an eight fight winning streak in the UFC is huge especially at the level of competition he's faced I think he'd beat GSP, I think GSP is a great fighter but an over-rated fighter as well.

GSP is the farthest thing from an over rated fighter there is. dont get me wrong i like fitch but GSP is pound for pound the number 2 fighter in the world behind silva. he is definetly not over rated by any means

Dont believe everything you hear. I have never seen Karo get a easy fight. And if he performs against Karo like he did saturday, goodbye streak.
As Karo stated( who the hell is Fitch.)

I like Fitch and am glad he is getting this well deserved title shot!
Karo's attitude and comments like "Don't you know who I am"(from TUF) and "Who the Hell is Fitch" don't help him get in good with the UFC brass and that is a major reason I believe he never got a shot at the title after hurting himself when he originally was supposed to get a shot.

If GSP does beat Fitch I'll believe he's number two, until then either Nog or Rampage hold that spot. I don't think GSP's stand-up is that great I think he's just become more of an LnP fighter since his fight with Koscheck which is why I said he's overrated.

And that all just goes back to attitude, and professionalism are just as important in a fighters resume. Which in turn always makes me wonder when people dont like Rich, Roger, Lutter, Silva,Fedor, Randy,Forrest are just a few names who dont run off at the mouth.
So I agree with you, and change my opinion.

What rumors? Karo himself said he rather not fight Fitch in an intervew someone posted a little while back. I'm sorry, but that makes me lose some respect for the guy. You should always be willing to fight the best if you want to call yourself a "champion".
