Jake O'Brien Released...Uhhh WTF???
MMA blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps - MMAjunkie.com
Jake O'Brien (10-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC), a 23-year-old heavyweight who suffered his first professional loss to Andrei Arlovski in March, has been released from the UFC and has agreed to a two-fight deal with the Palace Fighting Championship.
MMAjunkie.com today confirmed the turn of events with Ken Pavia, O'Brien's manager.
Needless to say, Pavia was a bit surprised by the UFC's decision to sever ties with O'Brien, a former Purdue University wrestler who had finished eight of his 10 professional victories via knockout -- seven of which came in the first round.
Uhh what the hell Zuffa? The heavyweight division is in pure shambles and you release the best prospect HW you have under contract because of 1 loss to a guy who was on his way out of the company and a former champion. WTF? Sure Irish had the "boring lay and prayer" stigma to him but still the kid is young and starting to learn a little bit. Why not send him to the WEC and let him raise all hell in that crappy division. I normally back Zuffa 100% but this is just a horrible move. Terrible

He was a boring fighter and didnt put people in the seats nor did he have enough draw for a title shot. Zuffa looks at things mainly from a marketing standpoint rather than talent sometimes.

He will probably make more from a middle-tier promotion than he would from the UFC.

I guess this is too bad, Even though he was a bit boring I was still impressed with his ability to control Herring... even if it was a LnP win. Good luck to him

It's a message to others. You can be boring, but you will fight in a different organization. This isn't a tragic event to me.

All of the fighters still in the UFC's HW division are now automatically in the Top 10.

Not bothered about this.
He made me wish UFC allowed knees to the head of a grounded opponent.
His win over Herring wasn't that great either, but his fight with AA was just horrible.
He kept avoiding any exchanges and kept shooting from way too far, AA sprawled and let him up, repeat...
I'm not sure he's that big of a "prospect" either.

I agree with the majority here, he was very boring to watch. I wish him all the best in his new organisation - He has far more potential to advance his carreer with them, than he ever would have with the UFC.

I would rather see JOB then Heath Herring anyday of the week. This is so stupid, what if he starts setting the world on fire and signs with Afflicition? Another ****ty move by the UFC, they might as well just get rid of the HW division because its pure trash.

So Jake leaves and that makes Nog, Werdum, Gonzaga, Herring, Kongo all trash?

No, the division as a whole is trash. Werdum, Nog, and Napao are the only 3 "legit" ranked guys arguably on any top 10 list. Herring is a goofball and Kongo is Kongo. Who else is after that? Scott Junk? Justin McCully?

I like all those guys you named exp Heath Herring. Do you see the way he came at Kongo? Not to be rude, but how much do you like MMA, as a whole I should say?

Well you also have Lesnar. But I don't really like him.
Losing Tim Sylvia and Andrei were bigger losses than Jake. Jake was just painful to watch.

I would probably say I watch more fights then anyone on this site. Just because Zuffa pushes Herring and Kongo as contenders doesnt mean they are good.
Vera is also one of the prospects they have left under contract, but I wouldnt be suprised if he cuts down to LHW.
LOL @ Brock Lesner, 1-1 and fighting in a circus in his next fight really adds depth to a lacking division.
