Matt Hughes On George St. Pierre
Thought you guys might be interested in this
Quote:
Matt Hughes dropped the following quotes on Kevin Iole in a recent interview. Hughes talked about Georges St. Pierre, his upcoming fight with Thiago Alves, and getting back to the "old" Matt Hughes :
Hughes On George St. Pierre:
"Obviously, Georges St. Pierre is a tremendous fighter, but I had a real bad night at the same time he had a real good night. When that happens, you saw what the result can be. But I did get into some good positions and I saw some things, but I couldn't do what I knew I needed to do."
Hughes On His Thiago Alves:
"To be honest, I like the matchup (against Thiago Alves at UFC 85)," "He's a stand-up guy. On the ground, he's not nearly as dangerous. I'll be stronger, I believe I'll be the better wrestler and I like the fact he's kind of a slow starter. I think I can wear him out before he gets going."
Hughes On Getting Back To The Old Hughes:
"I've pulled out some of the old Matt Hughes tapes and I'm trying to get back to being that fighter. Nobody should write me off just yet."

whats the problem? the guy was completely respecful...do you want him to die in his sleep
hell i like his assessment of thiago, the man tells it like it is
not many fighters admit that they had good positions yet were powerless to do anything with it

I don't like the idea of Matt Hughes going back to his roots and becoming the fighter he was. He needs to evolve with the sport or he's going to get left behind. The WW division is packed with wrestlers -Koscheck, GSP, Burkman, and Judo man Parisyan, not to mention Swick's takedown defense looked solid against Burkman...and all of these guys can strike, too. Hughes needs a new camp and new training partners and some new moves or I don't think he's going to get another title shot. I think his one dimensional game is just too easy to prepare for.

What do you want him to do?
Pray Jebus for some striking skills and a phenomenal guard?
He can't evolve. Not significantly anyway.
His game will be enough for a lot of guys still, but the belt is out of his reach now. The competition just passed him by.
Saying he needs to evolve is like telling Sergei Bubka at the end of his career that he needs to evolve because the Chinese found a guy that can jump 6,5 meters. He's not getting any younger or more athletic. He's been training striking and submissions for quite some time now. Expecting any evolution from him at this point is naiive.
Which I think is fitting because he might be a creationist anyway.
Ahaha, sick burn!

Yeah, you misunderstood.
That was one of bb's classic pre-emptive strikes on people who don't like Hughes. Matt needs that nowadays. Oh, remember the days when he was everyone's hero? How the mighty have fallen...

I think anybody can evolve. If Hughes was in a new camp training with new people he would learn new things and have to change his game up to survive.
The problem I think with Matt Hughes has always been his inability to evolve and I think it's a manageable problem for anybody. If there's something blocking his progress it's mental and he could work it out. Two times now Hughes loses and says he wants to go back to his roots. I've heard him say that he gets nervous trading punches and instinct kicks in when he shoots for the take down.
Props on the burn.
I should add that I don't expect Matt Hughes to ever change. I just think it's always possible to grow as a fighter, and I want it to be known that it's Hughes' inability to make that decision -be it from stubborness or trust in Pat Militech or faith in wrestling or fear of striking- that has left him behind in the WW division.
