Dana White: B.J. Penn > Kimbo
Something interesting I found...
"Dana White: B.J. Penn Would Beat Kimbo Slice
by Luke Thomas on May 22, 2008 10:36 AM EDT in News
Shameless:
White said he knows he has some competition from other organizations that have surfaced recently.
But as White looks in his rearview mirror, he doesn't see much of a challenge in what other MMA companies are bringing to the table.
One upcoming fight on national television from a rival organization will feature street fighter turned MMA fighter Kevin Ferguson, better known as Kimbo Slice.
"The amount of talent and fights we put on are second to none," White said. "Think about it, the CBS fight that they are coming up with, who gives a crap about Kimbo Slice? This guy can't fight MMA.
"You know what would happen if he fought in the UFC? I'd put him in against (lightweight champion) BJ Penn and (Slice) would get annihilated."
"The guy he is fighting, James Thompson, might get knocked out before he gets into the cage. Kimbo has no credibility at all in MMA. ... I am telling you, BJ Penn would beat him."
Whether or not White is right is largely irrelevant. No one with any knowledge denies just how green Kimbo is when it comes to professional level mixed martial arts. But Dana should be careful about his own glass house. If White is so strict and so concerned with only putting on the best fights with best fighters, one wonders why he signed Sean Gannon and or a very green, 1-0 Brock Lesnar. Doesn't he know Fedor or Pezao would kill him? The argument works both ways if we want to be petty.
What's notable to me is that Slice is probably making very good progress as a MMA fighter and might be ready for a serious challenge in a fight or two. Given Kimbo's athleticism, training team and work ethic, it is conceivable he could be a good professional fighter and all White is doing is robbing himself of the exposure and buzz Slice brings to the table when he fights with these ridiculous insults and classless statements. White is ensuring Slice adheres to Pro Elite brand loyalty over the long run, which as a self-professed businessman, is pretty poor technique on his part. Who on earth would want to work for a boss who insulted you as you learned the industry and gained skills?"
Dana White: B.J. Penn Would Beat Kimbo*Slice - Bloody Elbow
Here is another:
"In a recent interview with The Press-Telegram, outspoken UFC President Dana White made clear his feelings on YouTube sensation turned MMA fighter Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson. When asked about EliteXC’s upcoming national broadcast – headlined by Slice – White stated, "You know what would happen if he fought in the UFC? I'd put him in against (lightweight champion) BJ Penn and [Slice] would get annihilated.”
On Thursday, during a CBS Conference call for the upcoming event, EliteXC President Gary Shaw gave this response:
“Dana White is a j***-off. That’s what Dana White is. He’s a f***ing idiot and you can quote me on that. If he cared about mixed martial arts and the sport instead of caring about his big-a** swimming pool and his own personal gains, he would understand that statements like that make someone into a jerk.
First of all, I love B.J. Penn and he is a friend of mine. And his brother J.D. Penn works with our company. Kimbo Slice with one shot would knock out B.J. Penn, a 155 pounder. But they’re never going to fight. It’s an idiotic statement from a complete idiot.”
When pressed for his own feelings, Kimbo responded in his typical cool, brief manner.
“You know, it’s a free country,” he said. “You know, everyone’s entitled to their own opinion.”

Saying Fedor would beat Brock Lesnar is not saying the same thing as BJ Penn would beat Kimbo. Not even close. White's point is that a trained fighter with a significant disadvantage in size could be a big brawler. That doesn't apply to Fedor and Lesnar who are in the same weight class.

Actually I think BJ could beat Kimbo right now. BJ could easily put on 30lbs to at least make himself a MW. Conditioning would not be an issue as he could easily out last Kimbo. BJ could probably get Kimbo in a clinch then trip him up to the ground them beat him on the ground by RNC or some submission. I dont think he would just stand there to get bombed by Kimbo which seems to be the only way Kimbo can win.

I am still looking forward to his comments about last night.
If you were to judge just buy that fight you would say if anything Thompson has a good jaw. He showed a lot of heart.

I could think of any number of people that could beat him. BJ for one .. also Rampage.. Forrest.. etc..
this was his first real fight in MMA and was not very impressive. People are gonna give him credit of course.

I agree. Every time I see him fight I start to not like him because of all the hype. Then, after the fight he seems to be pretty classy and makes me like him again(he acted as if he was 'fortunate' to get the win and said that he still has a lot to learn in a very humble attitude). I actually think that BJ could beat him but that doesnt mean that I should 'hate' on Kimbo. I just 'hate' on the people doing the marketing. The good thing about the UFC and Lesnar is that they are not billing him as the 'Golden Boy'. The are saying that he is a physical beast (which he is) that could use his wrestling skills to successfully move to MMA. BIG DIFFERENCE.

I think Kalib Starnes would beat Kimbo Slice via Track Meet Cardio Exhaustion Tap Out. Somewhere in the middle of the Third Round.

ohhh I think Kimbo Slice would beat most of the Lightweights, at 155 pounds! , i mean common , the Height and Weight advantage would be enough of an advantage , forgetting about skills. BJ Penn with extra weight could be an exception , but no one else from the LW division i think.
Well seeing as though Bas Rutten is training Kimbo , that would tell you that Kimbo is serious about becoming a better MMA fighter, and obviously Bas Rutten see's potential in him.

BJ Penn would beat Kimbo by submission. I have'nt been impressed by Kimbo while Penn continues to amaze, when he decides to actually train.

Anyone who seriously thinks Penn can beat Kimbo is kidding themselves. Yeah, Penn has a lot more experience and is more well-rounded then Kimbo - but Kimbo's size and strength advantage would be way too much for Penn to handle. Penn can beat Kimbo? Common, get real people. Penn would be on the ground unconscious before the end of the first round.

In Pride Minowa beat Kimo by submission. Penn is far superior to Minowa and Kimo really is'nt that differant from Kimbo. No one is thinking that Penn is going to box with Kimbo. BJ is would be far more likely to wait until Kimbo is off balance, take him to the ground and choke him out, arm bar him etc..

Even if Penn was able to get Kimbo to the ground, Kimbo would just get right back up. In Kimbo's fight with Thompson he was able to work his way back up to his feet a couple of times and that was a 250 lbs guy on top of him. Needless to say I think it would be a lot easier for him to get back up with a 155 lb'er on top of him. One punch and it's all over for Penn.

I guess it all depends on who can do what faster. Would Penn lock on a submission before Kimbo is able to get back to his feet, or would Kimbo get to his feet before Penn can lock a submission. I don't know about anyone else, but when I see Kimbo reversing positions and getting up to his feet with a 250 lbs guy laying on top of him and then see people saying a 155 lbs Penn would be able to hold Kimbo on the ground long enough to lock in a submission, to me it seems that maybe some people have too much love for Penn and too much hate for Kimbo that it's messing with the rational part of their reasoning.

If Kimbo had anything that amounted to a ground game i would be hesitant to say Penn wins. However Penn is 1000X better on the mat than Kimbo can ever hope to be. Its not Kimbo hate, its just a fact that Kimbo is a fish out of water on the ground while BJ Penn is a fish in water. Penn is that good when the fight goes to the ground, especially against a person with no real BJJ skills.
