Rumor: Edgar vs Franca at UFC 87
Thats the word from NBCSports. If its so, its a fantastic matchup.
Quote:
Hermes Franca, currently serving a suspension for a positive steroid test from a match last July, is expected to return to the UFC shortly, a source told NBCSports.com.
Franca, who tested positive for drostanolone following his July 7, 2007 lightweight title decision loss against Sean Sherk, is expected to take on Frankie Edgar at UFC 87. Franca is currently still unable to fight in any states that sanction MMA, but his one-year ban will end on July 5, making him eligible for the August 9 event in Minneapolis.
The fight is not officially signed but both parties have agreed to the bout, according to the source.

i thought Hermes had been dropped by the UFC?? If he's fighting i'll be happy to see him. He's a really good fighter despite his poor lack of judgement regarding the use of performance enhancing drugs.

Franca asked for his release from the UFC during his steroid suspension. He thought by doing so, he would be allowed to fight overseas during his suspension. After being released, he found out that state sanctioning commissions really look down upon guys who go overseas to avoid serving their suspension, making it difficult to re-obtain a fighter's license when the suspension is up. He made a mistake asking for the release.
Thus Franca was a free agent but said all along he wanted to go back to the UFC when the suspension was up.

should be a good match-up. Franca usually is fun to watch, although there have been one or two stinkers in his matches. Should be fun to watch though.

Yes, I hope this is true. Franca was on a major roll until the fight with Sherk (9-0) or somethign like that. This is an outstanding matchup, I've always liked Franca, but the new and improved Franca that went on that major winning streak is even more fun to watch than ever!

Franca should roll Edgar and send him packing to 145. I like Frankie and know a bunch of kids he trains with so ill be pulling for him but he is to small compared to most of the guys at 155

I agree with this, as we seen in Edgar's last fight he is going to have trouble with a few of the bigger Light Weights. Maynard was able to take down Frankie at will, so I do think he is going to have a problem with Franca but it should still be a good fight. Maybe after this Edgar will drop weight go to the WEC win some bouts to fight Faber, that would be awesome.

i really like frankie edgar, but i dont think this is a good fight for him. i think franca will probably take this unless he suffers a bout of cage-rust. i think edgar would do well at 145
faber v edgar anyone?

I wouldn't count Frankie out...but that matchup would be too much like Gray Maynard...except worse b/c I think Faber's on another level.

Hmm. I disagree with you guys. I think this is a bad match-up for Hermes. Real bad. Hermes has a pretty good track record of poor conditioning, something that Edgar obviously doesn't. Edgar has sharp stand-up and fantastic wrestling ability, yet more things Hermes seems to struggle with. He's been out of the ring for over a year by the time the fight gets here. I like Edgar in this one. I do agree about him going to 145 though. I've mentioned it before, and I'm pretty sure he'd be an absolute juggernaut @ featherweight.

haha little known fact about Frankie Edgar... I trained at his gym once and he lives down the street from me.... well did before he moved to florida... anyway his head coach up and sold his gym to move to florida to train under franca while another student bought out the gym and became edgars new coach... just think its funny to see frankie fight a man his coach left the state to go train under.
