Jorge Gurgel ,worthy of being in the UFC??
Even though Jorge's record is ok,it's far from stellar in the UFC.
I personally don't think he would have had so many fights/chances if he hadn't been good pals with Rich Franklin.
Do you guys think he deserves to be there? Bearing in mind UFC'S rep for getting rid of some fighters sharpish if they don't cut the mustard.
Loss Cole Miller Submission (Choke)
Win John Halverson Unanimous Decision (record 16 - 6 - 0)
Loss Alvin Robinson Unanimous Decision
Win Diego Saraiva Unanimous Decision (record 12 - 7 - 1)
Win Danny Abbadi WHO? Oh yeah Matt Hamills TUF "friend"
Loss Mark Hominick

I've thought since TUF he wasn't good enough for the UFC. He was hyped as a very good BJJ competitor, but he's struggled to use this talent to his advantage. He may well be a top-notch BJJ fella, but seems to lack in every other aspect of MMA.
This is coming from a bias view though, I don't particularly like him.

That's the point i'm trying to make, even being accomplished at a certain discipline doesm't appear to help him in the milti-discipline of MMA. It might be a bold statement, but I think his abilities are "on paper" to a certain extent.

Hey, if Melvin Guillard can hang around after repeated losses why can't Jorge Gurgel?

Aslong as Rich Franklin sells PPVs , Gurgel stays.

He wins almost every other fight, right? He's 3-3 in the UFC. So, he's not dominating the division at LW. He has not faced the best opponents. I am not sure he could be some of the better guys in that division.

Those who can't teach, do. No one's saying George doesn't know fighting or isn't even a good fighter himself, he just isn't at the UFC level

What got me is his heart. He was going to walk away against Cole Miller with a UD if he didn't submit to the triangle choke. He was caught with 15 seconds left. It wasn't a joint lock that will do irreversable damage and it wasn't a choke that was putting pressure on the trachea. At least give yourself a chance to last through the last 15 seconds. If you pass out so what. You had the heart to try to make it and go for the win. I just don't think he is heart strong like Fitch (Wilson fight) or Hughes (BJ fight)

Honestly I agree about his heart , everytime I see him fight , its looks like he's just not interested in fighting and just doesnt put in the effort, plus I also think he needs to focus more on his Weight training, he doesnt seem to have alot of muscle, and most of the guys hes faced in the LW divison have overwhelmed him , strengthwise.

I wouldnt be particularly sorry to see him go. His UFC record isnt up to much and he hasnt exactly faced top competition. Like someone else said, I think its probably the Rich Franklin connection that keeps him around.

Gurgel is supposed to be a BJJ wizard and somehow he always ends up in stand up situations. I think i've heard Joe Rogan comment on this several times during Gurgel's matches and it just doesn't make any sense. Possibly one of the reasons that he isn't more successful. I understand his desire to put on a show for the fans but winning still means something.

funny, i think the opposite
the guy puts on the most exciting fights win or lose... i dont think his heart or his love to fight should be in question
most people would have been backpedalling and showboating to a decision win against cole miller, but i respect gurgel for continuing to fight and entertain
that beign said, while i wont say he doesnt have the talent to be in the UFC, i dont fight in the UFC nor am i a talent scout, but i do think that hed be better suited with WEC competition

I've seen Jorge in grappling tournaments and seminars and the guy truly is great on the ground. He's an exceptional instructor. But when the bell rings for an MMA fight, all his ground expertise gets thrown out the window, LOL! He's said it himself that he loves to just throw down in MMA. Its similar with Andy Wang. While that guy is a very accomplished submission grappler (BJJ Black Belt), something snaps when the cage door is closed on these guys and they end up trading punches and completely ignoring their base expertise.
Talent wise, Jorge would be better off in the WEC or such. But he's very friendly (he's a genuinely nice guy to talk to) with Joe Silva and Dana White, so I expect he'll remain in a gatekeeper/undercard role for a little while longer.
There is no denying that while Jorge forgets his strengths, his willingness to trade has made for some awfully exciting fights. Check out this highlight from just before he made it onto TUF.

Gurgel is a good gatekeeper for the UFC. He's a good Jits teacher too but a top competitor in the UFC I don't think he will ever be.
