Default Report (update): UFC 91 did reach one million PPV buys

I'm not real familiar with this F4W Online site but it looks like it's mainly a wrestling site. I bet some posters here know it.

We'll see if these numbers are on target soon enough.

F4W Online is reporting that the numbers for UFC 91 were close to a million PPV buys, but not quite there at 800,000. They are also reporting that the show made 4.8 million dollars at the gate, as previously reported. Out of the 14,272 in the building, 10,845 paid to see Brock Lesnar defeat Randy Couture via TKO to claim the title as the UFC Heavyweight champ.

While it’s doubtful we’ll see numbers like these for any upcoming UFC events, it shows that wrestlers like Brock Lesnar, coupled with known stars like Randy Couture can help pack bars and drive MMA fans to purchase a PPV at $45-55. It also means that Dana White recognizes the drawing power of wrestlers and other well known non-MMA entertainment stars in the UFC. Who will be next?

Dave Meltzer is pretty credible...he's been covering MMA for years. However, the UFC never expected the event to do 1.2 million buys...it was a ploy to get ESPN to cover the event. Their internal estimates were from 800-900K.

Although initial estimates peg the event's total number of pay-per-view "buys" at approximately 800,000, a source within the cable industry told MMAjunkie.com that the figure is likely closer to 700,000 with the possibility of rising to 750,000 to 800,000 in the coming weeks.

Oh, youve been following MMA long enough to know that most of Dana's 'guarantees' are smoke and mirrors, and all of his 'special announcements' are **** we have known for weeks.

Sorry dude, I meant that "bitching" comment for the articles and not for anybody here at the forums. I should have been more clear.

Then you get all the people watching it in the UK on Setenta but they wont class as PPV buys though, but setenta will be paying UFC each event, etc.

The WWE kids came through after all...

Update from Michael Rome: On Wrestling Observer Radio tonight, Dave Meltzer said that the 1,010,000 buy number is confirmed for UFC 91.

The number is actually amazing all things considered. The UFC just let the show sell itself, they did a lot of media but they hardly promoted it as well as they could. There was no "feud" between the fighters, no cross promotion with WWE or TNA, no TUF buildup, and no multi-part series. I recall the level of hype the UFC put together for Hughes-Gracie and Chuck-Tito, and this fight just didn't have the same kind of thing.

So what did it? Maybe it was the ad calling it the biggest fight of all time. Maybe Brock Lesnar, who was able to draw 600k against non-draws, all of a sudden became a mega draw against an established star. Maybe the return of Randy Couture excited all the UFC fans to see Lesnar get beat. Regardless of the reason, they lost to a huge ODLH fight by only 240,000 buys in a year where they did a lot of great buyrates.

All things considered, millions of people saw the UFC 91 card, and it was a card very easy on casual eyes. Tons of quick finishes, a decisive main event crowning a new star, and a rabid crowd.

A million PPV buys is a lot of money at $45 per buy.

True. I wonder if this report is real or will there be another update. Either way, hopefully the fighters will benefit from this in the future.

Similar info as what I posted earlier...w/boxing comparison included.

and if this post looks extra familiar, it's b/c I posted this info in the Boxing forum as well...

    The Fight Network

HBO has released the official buyrate for Saturday's fight between Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao. The pay-per-view megafight drew 1.25 million buys with $70 million in revenue. These numbers are promising given the current state of the economy. De La Hoya pocketed $20 million, while Pacquiao was guaranteed $11 million.

More promising numbers are out in the mixed martial arts world as Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that UFC 91 drew 1,010,000 buys, which would make it the highest grossing UFC pay-per-view since UFC 66, which was headlined by Chuck Liddell vs. Tito Ortiz. However, this number has yet to be confirmed and initial reports had hinted that the show did about 800,000.

According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, UFC 91 sold 10,845 tickets for a live gate of $4,815,675. Total fighter payroll was $1,118,000, plus $240,000 in bonuses.
