Default Herring OUT, Kongo IN against Cain Velasquez at 99

Illness forces Heath Herring to withdraw from UFC 99 bout against Cain Velasquez on June 13
    By: Jesse Holland

Mixed martial arts veteran Heath Herring has been forced to withdraw from his UFC 99 bout against undefeated heavyweight prospect Cain Velasquez, scheduled for June 13 from the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, as reported by MMA Fanhouse.

According to the report, Herring has been battling an illness for weeks and has been unable to train.

“The Texas Crazy Horse” has not seen action since a unanimous decision loss to Brock Lesnar at UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” back in August 2008. He sustained a serious eye injury during the fight, which required him to remain on the sidelines for several months.

Herring has had mixed results since joining the promotion in early 2007, losing three fights and winning two. He has gone the distance in all five of those contests. A big win over a rising star like Velasquez would have gone a long way in re-establishing him as a top talent.

Now Velasquez is left without an opponent — though the timing is a bit coincidental.

Former UFC and PRIDE heavyweight Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic announced yesterday (May 18) that he will return to the UFC on June 13 against Mustapha Al-Turk — who was already set to face undefeated American Top Team (ATT) heavyweight Todd Duffee, who fights out of the famous London Shoot gym in the United Kingdom.

With Duffee and Velasquez both needing a date for the big show, it would make sense to have them hook ‘em up rather than scramble for last-minute replacements.

Then again, that’s merely speculation on my part.

Velasquez most recently mugged Denis Stojnic at UFC Fight Night 17 for a round and a half en route to a second round technical knockout victory. It marked just the first time that a Velasquez opponent has made it out of the opening frame.

The American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) disciple revealed after the fight that he was disappointed with the dominating performance and vowed to come back better than an ever in his next appearance. Who that appearance will be against remains to be seen.

Wtf is with all the withdrawing?!?

I don't really wanna see Cain/Cro Cop at this point though, cause I don't wanna see Cro Cop lose his first fight back, and I think that would be a decent possibility if he were to fight Cain.

I think the increased # of cards and the intense training involved to stick around has something to do with it.

This sucks though...would've been a decent fight.

i think they were implying Velasquez vs. Duffee.

i agree with not wanting to see Cro Cop come back to a loss.

    Yeah you're right.

I just skimmed the article the first time through and missed that line.

I think Cro Cop coming back to a loss pretty much sums up what his luck in the UFC has been thus far.... slim to none.

Eh, Cain's on the rise and Cro Cop's a veteran looking for past glory. I'm intrigued.

Looks like it could be Cain v Kongo. No idea how reliable this MMA Bay is tho:

MMABay - All Your UFC/MMA News In One Place

MMABay can EXCLUSIVELY reveal that Wolfslair MMA Academy trained heavyweight, Cheick Kongo, has agreed to step in for the injured Heath Herring at UFC 99 against Cain Velasquez.

A source in France confirmed to MMABay that Kongo was approached yesterday about the fight and we can reveal that he agreed later that evening after consulting his trainers about taking it at just over three weeks notice.

Kongo is riding high after a string of TKO victories over Dan Evensen, Mostapha Al Turk and most recently, Antoni Hardonk have propelled the Frenchman straight into title contention.

It is thought that a win over the untested Velasquez will mean that Kongo would face the winner of the Lesnar/Mir title unification fight at UFC 100 on July 11th.

That actually interests me more than Cain/Herring.

Kongo's been on a roll lately, so we'll get to see just how much/little his takedown defense has improved against a top-notch wrestler in Cain.

My thoughts exactly; I just hope they can match this w/ Brown in the TUF finalie, I do doubt it though.....

I think Herring would have beaten Cain but Kongo's lack of TD defence will be fatal for him in this fight imo.

Definitely not as interesting a match-up as Cain and CroCop. I see Cain fast-tracking Kongo out of the UFC.

    Agreed.

I HIGHLY doubt a loss for Kongo would send him out of the UFC at all. He is currently 7-2 and would probably just be fed a lower tier guy to get him a W.

No, this loss isn't going to get him kicked out, I concur. Just saying this upcoming "L" against Cain is going to look awfully bad lining up to the other L's on his record.

Choo-chooo...what's that? Ah, that's the pink-slip train, Kongo. It's comin.

There are some reports stating that if Kongo wins he will get a title shot next.

When I see some more reliable sites reporting it then I will post a link.
