The reason why is because MMA is relativly only 13 years old. once there is more and more of a pool of talent, it'll get easier to group top tens.

I just watched the Le Banner HL vid posted in the other forum. I will say that he does hit hard, fast, and accurately. He could likely beat Sylvia. That loss to a submission makes me doubt Le Banner's ground skills... He has been doing stand up KB for over a decade professionally. It is sometimes hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Does anyone know what level of BJJ training Le Banner has had?

Did you miss the HL I posted on the first page of this thread? Yeah Jerome's weakness would obviously be the ground game, but he wouldn't have to worry about that much with Tim. That's one place where Tim doesn't want to end up either. Jerome has been training with Dean Lister who is a badass on the ground. Hopefully he can teach Jerome a thing or two. His last fight was against a much larger fighter who was just constantly taking him down and trying to lay and pray him. So finally Jerome just knocked him out after getting tired of trying to buck him off while getting smothered. So there is some progress, he's still not ready to take on someone who has good ground skills, but he's not a fish out of water so much anymore.

I'm agreeing with Jonny. To what degree is Sylvia's ground skills?
He does train with Miletich, which does mean something to me... but, I haven't seen it. He'll try to stand and get hurt.
LeBanner is scary.

wow, this topic really took off. i am not sure if i can add anything. i suppose i could say that you never know how a fight is going to turn out until it happens. you can guess a fights outcome based on the stats of the fighters involved it is still nothing more than an educated guess. someone brought CroCop into the mix here and i do think its relative to the topic. Mirko came into Pride with glowing kickboxing credentials, he combined that with a solid takedown defense to become one of the best MMA fighters in the world. by now most people know that Mirko has also trained in BJJ since his Pride debut. not neccesarily to use submissions to win, but to better defend against them until the fight is brought back to standing. why is that so differant than the Sylvia vs. LeBanner scenario? i don't think it is. i actually think that a fighter with a solid background in one skill can be more successful than a fighter who dabbles in a bit of everything like Tim, who is by no measure a master of anything. look at how successful Mark Kerr was with little more than a wrestling background? i think this could be a good fight if it happens. at the very least it will bring new blood into the UFC HW division.

This guy has some quick hands for a big guy. Sylvia just can't afford a loss a this point.
Don't forget that the UFC has plenty to lose in allowing this fight to happen. They don't want one of the better UFC heavyweights getting beat up by another organization. This will damage their image and quite possibly Sylvia's career.

i don't think that the UFC really has anything to lose. they claim they are the number one promotion in the world so maybe they need to back it up by letting Lebanner have a crack at Tim after his fight with AA. in the meantime have LeBanner fight a guy like Buentello on the same card. winner of Buentello/LeBanner gets Tim, winner of that gets AA.

If they really want to mess with Le Banner's head, then the UFC could sign Le Banner to a one, two, or three fight deal and put him in with Cruz in his debut. Excellent BJJ versus excellent striking? That would be a good fight, but I would love to see which fighter's style was dominant. As noted, Le Banner does not want to go to the ground... I would like to see if Cruz can handle a solid striker.

I think you guys are looking into it a little too far. I don't think Jerome is wanting to make a UFC career here. He just wants to beat up Tim because he thinks he gets too much credit. Basically he thinks he's overrated and his striking isn't as great as everyone thinks. I don't think he's looking to become the UFC champion or anything.
